What tripod to get?

Im looking to buy a tripod for my panasoncic hdc tm300, but want a good enough one so i can eventually move into a canon 7d. Price is kind of a big issue for me, but i dont mind spending to much money. Right now im looking at the monfrotto 745 legs on a 501 head or 190xbd legs with a 700cr2 head. I want a good tripod with real good panning ability.

Is it an over kill to get a 501 head for my tiny camera?

I think that the 501 might be over kill get a 701 and get some accesories for your 7d with the extra

i use a 701 with the 190 legs and it works fine for my DVC30, and I am moving onto a t2i, so i think you should be all set with that. however if you want a really sturdy rig i would suggest a different set of legs, they are kind of flimsy if you really start to add weight (for example you were to get a rig of some sort for the 7D)
