What to do with a bad FD lens?

fuuuu just made the same mistake on dvxuser. I think I'm gonna go ahead and get a lens adapter just to have fun with an old lens.

i got an adapter and have used FD lens' on my T2i, the adapter worked fine, the lens' i had were just not that great

ive got four or five fd lenses i'd love to use, is it worth picking up an adapter? itd be nice to get to use them... any like quality comparison tests? between an fd convert and a regular ef lens?

Using an adapter doesn't effect how it looks really, unless you have a really shitty adapter with a bunch of glass in it. Some of the old FD lenses trump the new EF versions so i day pick up the fotodiox adapter(40 bucks i think) and go for it.

hmm alright thanks, ive heard lots of bad things about them, il pick one up, itl be great to use those lenses, right now they just get used on my ae-1 for some film work. i have a

100-200 f4 vivitar

28-70 3.5 (i think) telemacro tamron

50 1.8 canon

19-35 3.5 vivitar series 1

and a couple teleconverters i don't use, they came with the lenses

the vivitar series 1's are BALLER

the 50mm is good too

no sure about the 100-100 or 28-70.

yeah they all seem to shoot decently. the series 1 is plastic and it seems to have something rattling around in it, but it shoots fine. its a plastic body though. whats so great about the 19-35? i picked them all up along with a couple cameras for 65 bucks on craigslist, so i don't know a ton about the lenses. learn me plz.

I just have read alot of good things about vivitar series 1 lenses, they are the best lenses they made back in the day and stomp out any of their old zooms they made, if youre gonna have an old vivitar zoom, series 1's are the best.

hm alright solid thanks for the info/advice, i think il pick up an adapter. theyl look better then the kit right? thats all i have right now, im using a t2i

how far can i expect to focus if i dont have the infinity focus? just to the last marking on the lens be for infinity? cause that seems kinda weak, i take a lot of far away shots

You don't understand, infinite focus is made for shooting things MILE away, like the nebulas. There is something call "____" focal length, i cant remember what its call right now and how it exactly works, but basically its a certain point in your focus range that the majority of your image will be in focus and there is a small equations to help you find it based on your focal length. For example, on a 50mm usually you can focus to like 10ft and everything will appear in focus.

Also, you can stop down to 8 or 11 and this will help you achieve a very deep focus, infinity focus isn't needed.

hm, well thanks i wasn't aware. you sure cause i just took my 50 on my ae-1 stopped it down a bit but not much cause its dark in my house set focus to 10 ft and it didnt focus to my kitchen which is maybe 30. and to the op- sorry for jacking your thread

Sorry, i didn't mean for my estimate to be perfectly correct. I was trying to recall an experiment i did last fall with my 50mm and i thought it was around 10ft. Landis knows what im talking about, he told me so i hope he chimes in or repsonds to my pm. But there is a point with every lens that it will be near infinity.

alright thanks so much for the help, i never knew that. let me know when he responds to the pm. it'd be great to put my fd lenses to use. when i bought them i didn't have my t2i, i just shot film for a while (good for my technique and all anyway) and i assumed i'd be able to convert them. and im assuming were talking video, because of your background in it. i'll still have good image quality for my much larger stills right?

sweet thanks, so thats how things like gopros that are all fixed focus work? they're just a really close hyperfocal distence?

No, those are different, very small sensors have a very deep DOF, thats why dslrs can acheive such a shallow DOF. The smaller the sensor, the deeper the focus. Im guessing gopros are set at a certain focus (infinity or near) and stopped down 8+ so its all in focus. My hvx even at f4 can have a very deep focus.

Yeah, im not saying infinite focus is worthless, im just saying that you can do without it.

alright well thank you so very much, itl be great to get a bit more usage out of these lenses, films so expensive :( and 40 dollars or whatever for the adapter is much cheaper then lenses to fill out those ranges, even if i do lose infinity focus because of it.

Thats kinda what I thought too but my friend had and FD lens with just a normal mount and the focal point was super screwed up and the people at my local camera shop said to try and avoid FD mount lenses..

i dont really want to buy an adapter because i paid 15 for the lens, and 40 for an adapter would make it a 55 dollar lens, but it's shitty
