What to charge for editing video

I have had multiple companies come my way in the past few months looking for someone to edit footage for them. I haven't really been in this position before and I don't know what a typical rate is.

I've been a little hesitant to ask for more that $20 an hour. Should I be asking more that that?

None of the editing is very demanding (adding music, logos, and titling, and piecing together footage). Also note that I'm a junior in College and edit these at home on my laptop.

It may be easier for you to set a pre project rate, this way both of you will feel it is fair, and you could ask them what they are expecting and what their budget is and go from there

ehh, i donno. "going from there" in regards to their budget and they will always try to scam you out of money by saying they dont have a big budget. Well people need to learn that editing/filming/photography IS NOT FREE.

To OP: Charge a flat rate at first, say, $100-150, then an hourly fee on top of it ($15-25/hr). That way you don't get screwed on a project if you made it a flat rate that ended up taking 25 hours of editing, and if its easy work with low hours, you still make a decent amount that dubs the project worth your time and effort.

I was implying that starting out as a flat rate per job might be easier to negotiate, because many companies may have no idea how much work it is or how long it will take, and he said he is a student. Otherwise state an hourly rate, and give a relatively precise estimate on how long it will take. Either way make sure you know what you are agreeing to before you do anything
