yeah not everyone wants to pay for this stuff, i totally understand it, 15 years ago i would have never paid for icloud, but as an adult with a job its nothing.

They are slow and annoying but a terabyte is a terabyte lol and they are compatible with anything that uses a USB port, like yea it's no iron wolf but for phone backup it's probably the best bet

$12 a year. Come on I don’t care how young you are. You should be able to scrape $12 together. And if it’s an “old” iPhone be forsure doesn’t need much space. I’ve been rocking the 99 cent plan for years now. Just finally had to upgrade to the $2.99 plan. I’m using a 15 pro though.

50gb is absolutely nothing, so $2.99 for 200gb is the minimum IMO.

Like i said 50gb worked fine for me. I had my iPhone and iPad on that. Zero issues. I don’t save my music to cloud though. Literally just had to upgrade after like idk 5-6 years give or take. If you have you’re settings right 50gb is more than enough.

My google one is only 100gb and its completely fine (only at 15gb ish, i only backup photos) so im with you, i just think OP has a different goal if hes asking about external drives.
 
Get a 3 terabyte external hard drive and you're set for life.

I'm personally just not a fan of paying subscription services, over a lifetime you'll end up paying more than if you just bought a hard drive. The price comparison isn't even close, especially since you will eventually need to pay to upgrade your online storage space as you store more and more.

Also, I'd rather own and be in control of my photos instead of them being at the mercy of google/apple

edit: I have the seagate 3Tb expansion drive, like above. Do not cheap out and buy anything under $100, as they are not reliable.
