What powder skis can be center mounted??

Hey NS,

I am looking to buy some powder skis, but I want to mount them at true center of the ski. I also want them to be twin tip of course. I know that most powder skis aren't designed to be mounted true center, but I don't know which ones are designed that way or can be mounted true center. Any ideas?

You can mount any ski at true center....

That being said, I'm currently on a pair of Surface Outsiders. 109 underfoot, and very rockered. I use them as my everyday ski cause they're too much fun.

Both sets of my chopsticks are true center mounted as are my surface labs. I think I will be mounting my candide 4.0 2back of true center. My shiro's are mounted + 8 of suggest which puts you very close to the center of the side cut

Why do you want to center mount them though? unless you are going to be using them as a park ski I wouldn't recommend it. For a freestyle powder ski, it's usually best to mount just a few cm back from center.

I feel like ones you go above a 100mm waist you should put the bindings back (2-2.5) (If you want to use them for pow and such..)

Yeah don't mount full pow sticks center, you'll be better off mounting a few centimeters back from center or halfway between boot and core.

I ride Kitten Factory Layzrblaydz mounted dead center for my everyday skiing at resorts and for pow jumps. They are symmetrical so they are intended to be mounted dead center.

Unless the ski is designed to be mounted dead center.

I've been riding the Surface Balance for the last 3 years and they ripped at full center. It works well because they are symmetrical, stiff and have dramatic early rise. I'd recommend sizing them taller than you are. If you right at or just a couple cm taller than the closest size, this probably isn't the right ski for you.

On the other hand, my JJ's and Rocker 2's would not ski well center mounted. I go 2-2.5 back.

4frnt YLE's. They are completely symmetrical in shape and rocker, so they would do fine center mounted. one of my buddies has a pair and he loves them

Oh yeah whoops I was assuming they weren't designed for a center mount. Thanks man!

Unless you plan on landing switch as much as charley ager in the deep stuff... don't.

You'll enjoy skiing pow more with them mounted a couple cm back. You'll be able to charge harder too man. Keep the centre mount for your days spent in the park. Just my opinion.

Surface New Lifes baby

damn fun ski that's made to be center mounted. hope you like a shit ton of rocker tho

Yeah they'd probably be fine at center but the recommended mount is actually just a little back from center. The widest points of the YLE are the same width but it is not a completely symmetrical ski.

Uhhh?? What on earth could you possibly be talking about? The flex isnt symmetrical but that ski is for sure fully symmetrical. I would love to hear what you think isn't symmetrical about that ski.

Also fun ski, just needs more taper in the tips and tails, felt super on rails and not maneuverable or slashy imo. (Thats how I feel with a lot of 4frnts though)

Sorta off topic, but how do they charge? i bought a pair and I am curious on how they will compare to my devastators in that category.

Any can. If you want symmetrical, Surface Lab 001. I have them, good fun skis but the bases aren't very durable, they get core shots easily. That's the only thing I don't like about them.

judging by the pics and vids ive seen you post, im very surprised to see you ride full center pow sticks and JJs sometimes. is it because you have a big quiver and switch it up depending on the day?

I just read somewhere that freestyling would be better even with pow skis

Bases are a tad slow, but they charge just fine.

Any ski can be center mounted, but only symmetrical skis are intended to be mounted at true center. Skis can feel really different mounted in different places. If you mount a non-symmetrical ski at true center, you won't be able to have full use of the sidecut, Freestyle powder skis are usually mounted a few centimeters back. I use the K2 Hellbent as my daily ski and I mounted them at core center with the Marker Griffon Schizo so I can move them six centimeters back from core center.

They're actually a bit wider at the tip than tail.

Source: I have them

Hands down favourite ski of all time. I'll replace my New Life's with Balance's once they go. Rooster tails for days.

Center mounted for sure

I've got an old pair of AK JJ's (rock skis) and 2014 Rocker 2's as heavy weight touring setups. I've been riding the surface new life for the past 2-3 seasons for everything else (inbounds pow days/sled ski/slack country). I beat them to hell so I just bought the Surface Balance (it's just the 'New Life' re-marketed).

Whenever I'm out on the JJ's or Rocker 2's, I always miss the Surfaces and never the other way around. As long as we're talking powder conditions, there really isn't any terrain they can't handle.

I'm even considering taking my AT binding off the JJ's and putting them on my old New Life's just for the hell of it.

Well do what you want, but almost all well known freestyle pow skiers, Eric Pollard, Parker White ect. ski with their bindings just a few cm back. Unless you are in pretty shallow powder having center mounted skis just makes it harder to keep your tips up and it's just a very unpredictable off balance feeling.

No they are not. Symmetrical dimensions. Sure. But the side cut, flex, and rocker is not. Great ski, mount them at recommended.

Again, the side cut (and flex and rocker) isn't symmetrical

oh yeah, those are pretty big boards and im assuming theyre decently stiff. nice to see the new version finally has sintered bases too haha

I have On3p Jeffrey 114's that are center mounted, they're fine both in the resort and in the back country. I center mounted them with guardians intending them to be a BC jump ski and they've pretty much turned into my everyday ski.

Are they the Outsiders or the older version with the old extruded bases?

Also can vouch for the Surface Labs. Have mine centermounted and wouldn't want it any other way. You can tell they were designed to be ridden this way and damn they are fun in the powder. They have a more park ski/jibby feel than any other pow ski I've ridden, maybe only rivaled by the Line Pollard Opus. Long story short, centermounted (or close) pow skis are fun as all hell and I don't see myself going back to traditional anytime soon.

One lifes, but I also have outsiders

Yeah, that's my only complaint with the Labs, the extruded base. It gets gashed up too easily and gets sluggish if you go without waxing for too long. I wonder why Surface hasn't upgraded it yet, maybe it's the convex design that requires a softer base? However my old joysticks also have an extruded base and are impossible to gash up no matter how many rocks I roll over
