What is the best way to travel with skis on an airplane?

soft case should be fine. I've never heard of anyone getting back broken skis from a flight. also, then you have to deal with having a huge hard case to take around with you. a soft case you can easily pack away somewhere.

Definitely soft case. You'll have to check it into oversized anyways so they'll be pretty careful with them. Stuff a bunch of your clothes in the bag to protect your skis and binidngs, it also saves a ton of space

Something with wheels. Da Kine Fall Line is a good bag.

Always take boots as carry on. Takes some weight out of your ski bag, plus its not the end of the world if they loose your bag. You can always borrow decent skis, but not boots.

I flew to Hood last week, I have a ski bag that has no padding what so ever. I just put some bubble wrap on them, 2 layers on the tips and tails, 4 around the bindings. I also wrapped a towel around them on the way there. They got there and back in perfect condition. I did a shitty job of wrapping them up again for the ride back and didn't even put towels around them and they were still perfectly fine. Don't worry too much about them.

Just remember to carry on your boots, good luck!

has anyone ever found padding necessary? I mean, look at how you treat you skis on the hill. There's no way they'll even be treated half as bad with even the worst airline. unless they fall off a baggage cart and are run over. I guess the advantage is it's a place to put extra clothing.

I've never used padding. I'm gonna stuff clothes in bags and put them in there.

What is this about boots as a carry on though? Can you still take a bag?

Even if you take one pair of skis take a double ski bag you can fit boots and all your ski clothes in their too, and airlines still count a double bag as one pair of skis; at least air Canada did for ne

It probably doesn't do much. I'm more worried about my bindings getting messed up than anything else

Same. I mean, we basically throw our skis at bars I metal, they can take a beating. I just wrap a little bubble wrap aroun the tips and tails and a good 3 or 4 layers around the bindings.

soft case is cool; I have a really big one I stuffed two pairs into and flew to Argentina.

I'm trying to sell it for cheap, if you live around Tahoe/Reno. or Bay Area. lemme know?

I use a big Dakine case.

Most important thing: WHEELS!!

Rolling that giant phallic shaped thing is so much better then carrying it and killing everyone in your immediate surrounding when you turn.
