What is lens diffraction and how to avoid it (for all you dslr noobs)

lol f42? f57? wtf haha who the fuck shoots lower than f16? I thought his comment about shallow DOF vs deep DOF at f8 vs f57 was hilarious. By f11, unless you're at some bullshit angle (like the 50 dollar bill) everything will be in focus. I like videos like this, informative, but also gives me a lol.

but yeah basically summary is keep your lens between f/5.6 and f/11ish

Yeah I dunno what lens they were using, but the highest ive heard of is 32.

ya, and this is only on a couple lenses. I have at least 1 that "only" stops down to f16

i've heard of some pinholes/zone plates with ridiculous f stops, but i've never handled a regular lens that goes further than 32 anyways.

Evan, he clearly states it's mostly a problem with macro and landscape.

As far as apertures go: Macro lenses have much smaller f-stops. f/64 isn't that rare on macro lenses.

large format lenses often stop down to f128 or further. not really relevant to photographers on this site, but still.

Yeah, and with pinholes you can get down to really low f-stops, I'm hopefully gonna try shooting pinhole 4x5 soon, really stoked.
