What external hard drives actually work on XBox?

I bought a 500GB WD My Passport Essential and it doesn't work on my 360. I tried to format it to FAT 32, and it didn't work. Then I called tech support... Turns out I need My Passport AV. WTF?

What external drive do you use for your 360?
 
One of the recent updates, (last 3 weeks) Allows you to use flash drives, so whatever external hard drives work like a flash drive would work. But I tihnk they both work the same way.
 
yeah you can make up to a 16gb partition and the xbox has to format that partition so the xbox can read itsucks that it only goes up to 16gb
 
This sucks. My friend can use his drive, which is pretty much the same, but I can't use mine?

I also have a Mac. I already reformatted it to DOS, but still doesn't work. So basically I need a flash drive?
