What does sending vibes mean/do?

I friend posted this earlier

"Provoking topic of the day:

In a time of sorrow why do people feel compelled to say, "Thinking of you..." What good does thinking about someone do? It's useless. You can't telepathically make anyone feel better. It's a secularized version of prayer.

It seems to me there are two options: Either God is real, loving and interacts with us - in which case we should pray. Or, God is not real, loving or does not interact with us - in which case we should do something tangible, since merely nice thoughts accomplish nothing.

The luke-warm middle ground here makes no sense."

Maybe it is because I don't know what it fully means, but I kinda of feel the same way about people saying sending vibes. So, what do you think, what does sending vibes mean, and what does it do?

It's karma bro, positive energy. Maybe it influences the chaos around us into being slightly in our favor maybe it doesn't. It's the thought that counts

I don't think you know what karma is. What does the thought count for though? If you are just thinking about someone it will not change anything.

That's a theory you're stating as fact. We're coming from two different theoretical points of view. You can have your train of thought and I can have mine

im sure people use it and actually mean it, and want people to feel more positive and be happy, but it really just seems like yet another one of those fake, insincere ways people use to "show" support for someone/something. i don't have an issue with people paying respects and showing support, just do it because you actually feel that way. not because everyone on FB and NS is doing it.

It is about spreading positive energy. Does that energy actually make it anywhere? Eh good luck proving it. But, it is about trying to keep the positivity going and letting somebody know you feel for them. It is very similar to just saying "i'll keep your family in my prayers" Is anybody actually listening to the prayers? Nope. But, it is nice to let someone know you feel for them.

Agreed, but what reason do we have for believing either of these theoretical views?

Examples of good and bad vibes

Bad Vibes

If I said, "kill yourself, your life's not worth living." That would send bad vibes and alter your thinking to think bad stuff

Good Vibes

If I said, "Stay alive, your life's worth living. Life's a beautiful thing" Your mind would alter to believe your lifes not as bad as you think it is.

Vibes are encouragement

Okay, but I feel like just saying sending vibes is not an encouragement

It's pretty fucking annoying in my opinion. Vibes to me are equivalent to the whole 1 like=1 prayer facebook bullshit thing that happened two years ago. It's like telling someone you're going to pray for them, it's going to do absolutely nothing.

I can't explain why you think the things you think

I know why I believe the things I do, and I was just curious why you believe the things you do.

Well that's not what you said. You said something much more in line with a general question about the universe than a direct question to me but to answer your question why not? Call it optimism

A: I would put money on the fact that it likely does make most people feel better to hear this.

B: There's nothing "telepathic" about it. It triggers physiological response (physically taking place in the brain).

Simply acknowledging someones loss lets that person know you care about them and may help them feel less alone.

Telling someone your "praying for them" would trigger the same response, regardless if you actually pray for them or not.
