What do you think the most artistic ski edit/production is?

Title says it. That thread on photography as documentation vs. art got me thinking, most ski films hardly stray from the pure documentation side of things. But some do a really good job of communicating the rider's individual style, or take a completely different approach to the filming/editing side of things.

So post up unique or artistic ski-related edits/films, or say if you think it's where a segment of ski filmers/editors should go or not?

Here's the first example I can think of on the spot, and it's really just ski porn in b&w with a unique song choice. I'm sure there's better out there.

i couldn't finish that edit either, way too boring. every shot was the same and the song kept repeating itself as well

that first edit did nothing for me. go pro on a stick? black and white to cover up the over exposure? "unique song," that didn't fit the edit at all?

here

^That edit was sweet, but I don't see how it was anything different than any other edit, except for using a song that's a bit different? Angles, tricks, and editing seemed pretty basic to me. I agree my example might not have been the best, so here's another one. Funnily enough it's shot with a gopro as well, but it just captures the serenity of pow shredding so well.

And sherpas are getting there too. They're definitely trying to get some deeper meanings across, but I don't think they're quite subtle enough about it. Song choice kinda ruins the vibe with that "look we're badass" feel.

I thought it had some distinguishing characteristics. The sounds design was great, I'd like to see a lot more editors put effort into audio as well as the visuals. The composition was also nice. It had the cinescope crop, but all the long lens(and almost all the wide) shots worked well with it unlike a lot of edits. Plus the colors were gorgeous...

To be honest OP I didn't find anything artistic about the first video you posted. The song was just slapped in there; there's nothing to prove that they were trying to evoke emotion with the song choice. That edit had no filler and no representation of anything other than skiing. In terms of representing style...MAYBE you could get away with the song choice, but everyone does that. Other than that, I don't think that's a very good representation of what you're trying to show. That video sucked IMO.

The video in Crotchkiller's post was boss. I don't see how you can say that "Angles, tricks, and editing seemed pretty basic to me." when the video you posted was simply follow cams from a go pro slapped together with a random song. Pop the Spot had cut aways, camera movement, audio, and it all really blended together to draw the viewer in. This is a representation of what should be in the thread.

OP, I think you're trying to hard to find something "bare bones" that's not dolled up with a filmmaker's fancy camera/editing/color/angles etc; but if we're talking about artistic video, we're really talking about what these filmmakers do. Sure, it may not be terribly unique, but you said unique and artistic. Pop the Spot and the two videos from zb are the most deserving of the recognition of this thread.

Sidenote: Parallels is boss.

I did my best to pick videos that showed any combination of a) forethought, b) 'classic' videographical talent, c) interesting content, and d) coherence.

Cheers.

Haha ok maybe I should have put some more thought into an example. That edit just stuck out in my head as trying to be different, though like I said it wasn't anything special.

And what I meant by "seemed pretty basic to me" was that, while superbly done, there wasn't anything super unique that grabbed me. I'll watch that edit multiple times to see nice shots that get me stoked on skiing, but it's not exactly what I was going for with this thread. This forum is notorious for caring a whole bunch about gear and IQ a lot more than content, and I really wanted to stray away from that in this thread.

But I'll be honest, what I have in mind is probably not what a lot of ski/snowboard filmers have in mind. I want to see something that gets away from being purely visually pleasing and gets towards provoking some sort of deep thought/understanding. I feel like most ski/snowboard filmers put the aesthetically pleasing before the deeper content of their work, and I have no problem with that. I just want to see if a totally different approach can be done. So I made this thread more to see if anyone else knew of an edit that did it, because clearly the ones I was thinking of didn't.

My idea of "art" or "artistic" might be different than all of yours, so by all means keep posting these edits.

But holy shit 88 and sunny is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Something more than just skiing. If only there could be something that powerful/thought-provoking that was a little bit more related to skiing. Then that would be what I was thinking of for this thread.
