hey guys I have recently started to do color correcting and i was wondering what you guys thought about it.I made the color corrections about 3 weeks ago and i just couldnt upload them because i didnt have vimeo plus until now
here is the first edit without color correction

Here is that same edit with color correction in fcp7

Now here is a different edit without color correcting (not as good of an edit imo and the quality in some parts is bad but there are some crashes at the end

Now here it is color corrected with magic bullet looks

So I was wondering what you guys like better color correcting in fcp7 or with magic bullet looks?
And thank yo so so much for watching all of the videos (and if you didnt watch them i would still like to know if you like it better with fcp7 or mbl)

magic bullets is for color grading.

color correcting is a different process usual done with a three wheel color corrector.

Please explain the difference?

I always see people mentioning the two, but I can never figure out the difference.

Colour Correction = Making the whites white

Colour Grading = Making the colours appealing giving them a style

Thats just what I think of it

Color correcting is a process meant to "correct" the colors of the image, or make them neutral and consistent from clip to clip. The purpose of color correcting is to provide a base image to be graded.

Grading is the more expressive and stylistic stage, where you get radical colors and tones.

The main problem with your last video was that there was a lot of clipping. "Clipping" is when the values get either too dark or too bright to display detail, hence why your shadows are solid black without texture, and your skies/snow are solid white without texture. Using a waveform monitor can eliminate this. Here's a simple tutorial that should get you started on color correcting. I won't go into grading, because it's an extremely complicated topic and getting good at color correcting should suffice for now. If you have more questions later, I can point you in the right direction.

I didnt know that the first 2 songs were re-used, and i for got about the third untili was halfway through editing it. where were the first two songs used?

Anybody have links to some good color correction/grading tutorials for FCP7 and Color? My attempts at color grading/correction never come out how I want them to and I always end up getting frustrated and just exporting halfass grades. Aside from everything to do with audio, its the one part of my workflow I feel needs the most improvement.

Don't worry about it; use whatever song you wish. Everything has been done before; it's stupid to care if a song has been used in a ski video or not.

ya thats the way i feel about it (I am curious of where those first 2 songs are from though), but DTF just still pissed over when he got 4 songs stolen in 4 days

it's already been answered a few times but i'll give my definition.

i always tell people that color correction is all about making the colors accurate (levels are good, blacks are black, whites are white), while color grading is about making the colors 'cool' (boosting saturation, flattening blacks, adding a blue hue to blacks, whatever you think looks good).

nono its not the fact that I got them stolen I just like hearing new songs in new edits, it turns me off when I hear a song that has been used already and makes me not want to watch the edit.

The first one looked like you didnt even do anything except maybe saturated. The second one looked like you put the block buster theme on MB and said good. The second one was way too over saturated and over exposed and the vignette looked shitty.

Focus on creating contrast with your black and white levels, adding SOME saturation and playing with the overall white color of your edit.

First one I made a mistake, it is a remix but the dub is horrible and its been used so many times.

Second one is in an edit lurking somewhere I will post when I find it.

this is about what i would say.

blockbuster is a dope look and imo probably the best one in MBL, but you are gonna HAVE to drastically change it to fit each clip. if you just drop it on your clip, it's gonna look bad 99% of the time.

That part gives me the biggest boner every time. Even though I always wanted to use that song in a edit and never got to...

This... so if you get every clip to the same neutral levels as demonstrated in the USC tutorial you then can color grade the by applying the magic bullet look to all your clips at once this will drastically shorten applying it individually and messing with the levels each time. It will also help your edit remain consistent as far as colors keep in mind it'll only be consistent if you color correct before you color grade and all your shots are similar in nature (ie. all shots skiing on a partly cloudy day or all night shots)
