What do you think about this idea?

ok, this is kind of a sketchy idea but im kina willing to try it out. I am thinking of making a mini ski about 1 to 1.5 feet long. I will make a special metal frame on the middle of the ski that is about 2 by 2 by 2 inches. Then, there will be a hole in the middle so i can put a monopod in it and secure it in place with a pin or something. The monopod will be on a ski so when im filming on snow and im going down the hill, i can put it on the snow snow it would be just like a regular ski. It will be able to swivel, but not too much so it wont turn sideways when im filming. It will have kindof hard springs in it so i can lean it forward and side to side a little but enough so its mobile but not able to collapse on the snow and break the camcorder. I will maybe draw some sketches and post them but i dont know how to. It's just an idea that i think that i will actually do as a project this summer. Please give me feedback either negative or positive. Constructive criticism is good just dont say ohh man this is the gayest thing ever. Your and epic failure. Just help me out here please. +++K for good help, advice, and feedback.

i think a certain problem will be the camera will be taking the shock from bumping on the snow and such. so when you film with a cam in your hands, your legs and arms are taking the bumps but if you attach it to the ground, its just gunna shake the camera. thats my theory atleast, cant hurt to try

thank you for the help.10/10 for you. thats a good point. Maybe if i put in a spring on the bottom between the monopod and the ski. So while its able to pivot, it is also able to move up and down a little sort of like shocks in a car and use the image stabilizer on the camcorder. And i can kindof use is as ski pole. So i can film myself while skiing but so i also have a little bit of stabilization.

nope, dont like it at all.. I would not spend extra money on a monopod ski when I could just hold the camera much more securely and bounce free.

I like that your thinking though.. but this just would not work out at all..

yea i'm not really liking it. you have the issue of stability and going for a clear picture and that'l be a bitch to overcome (and even if you do fix that problem the device that you have made will be bigger than a monopod by that time). And there's also the issue of mobility. A monopod would only be able to go in a straight line withough looking like a shitshow it seems (you could maybe fix this by by putting in a spherical axle sort of thing in the monopod, like that dyson vaccume cleaner the dyson ball)
If your looking for a sweet way of filming yourself I'd look into building a snorricam (google it). If you've seen requiem for a dream or know about darren aronofsky's style of filming you already know what it is. After seeing it I thought this would be sweet to use skiing but instead of making a tight shot of just the neck up make it more of a shoulders up shot...i donno
glad to see ideas out there, and who knows it may be the next best thing but for now you just gotta experiment!

its a good start but im with everyone else on this. heres another idea to get your brain pumpin on a new idea.

maybe fopr another idea you could a like a stability holder that you screw in to were a tripod would go but it would have like mini hydralucs to absorb extra shock for super smooth shots. just another idea.

Good Luck!

i was talking earlier about getting shocks in and i was thinking about it being able to move. The dyson ball thingy is a good idea and may be hard to make but hey! its worth a try. Thanks for the ideas everyone. +k. this was just an idea so that i dont have to be watching tv all summer.

you want a better probably more desired idea...

make a dolly thats extremely portable

i think this could be a great idea, it is in a basic sense a dolly as in it moves the camera steadily. I agree with other people in that the bouncing would be the biggest problem and i dont think the spring would work because your camera is not that heavy so when you hit a bump the whole thing would bounce, but if you got a softer spring the camera could sway on the spring. What about no spring but something like a glide cam attachment so it hangs on a ball joint with weight on the cam. just another thought, but ive always wanted to try this idea out too, theres gotta be a way to do. let us know how it turns out.

dude thanks a lot. Great ideas. im not surprised you have 10 posts but karma at 5000. ++K for you even more!

if your talking about doing follow cams like this then no i dont think you understand how much your legs and actually your body act as a "spring" to absorb movement. this isnt going to work well at all for that.

if though your talking about just small gliding movement kind of imitatating a dolly well then yeah you could probably get something decent out of this.

I think it could work, but with tons of time perfecting it, i think if you want to do follow cams rigging up some kind of cable cam would work better and be much easier (to get a good shot), finding a place to set that up would be difficult though. i doubt most mountains would let you string a cable across the trail.

i knew someone was going to say that but my bad. i just didn't know what it was and then i googled it. my b

well its just that you seemed like you knew what you were doing with a camera and then out comes that statement

kinda threw me off

it would be way easier to build a diy steadycam of some sort. the ground is bumpy its just adding another factor that you have to have something to steady even more.

im sorry but this is a bad idea to try this for follow cams (not your cable cam idea if you thought i was talking about that)

ill give it a shot this summer tho. it may work or it may not. You never know if you dont try. Maybe i will defy all odds.

******NEW PROJECT*******. i might do this monopod ski thing but i will defenitelly make and extremely portable dolly that you can take to the mountain.. Tell me what you think about that.

I think you need to find a engineering forum and read up on why simplicity in design is vital. Your trying to make something extremely complex that doesn't need to be.
