he was a pretty good president actually, but he did focus heavily on military despite trying not to. it was the cold war so he had to prepare for nuclear war but he poured a shit load of money into weapons and designed the highways so that the underpasses were high enough to fit trucks with missiles underneath them. he also really fed the red scare by shitting on communists so much. some people say that the scare on the home front was more prominent than the actual threat of the cold war

He was a solid president, but he made 2 major mistakes.
Iran coup detat- Overthrew the democratic Iranian leader and installed the Shah who went on to torture and kill many people. Generally pissed Iran off and then they had the Revolution and hated the US since (extreme sparknotes)
Helped build the military industrial complex (fancy term for governments intermingling with corporations for military equipment). He later warned of it, but his administration also helped build it.
