What Can I do to Make my Laptop Faster?

Recently my laptop has been getting slower and slower to the point its a pain in the ass to even use.

I got it in the fall of 2005 so it's pretty old and performance has been lacking lately. I try to stay away from doing stuff that can really fuck it up like downloading music on limewire and a ton of porn.

So does anyone have some advice for idea that can speed this thing up a little bit, maybe things to delete or hidden folders where stuff is stored that I really don't need?

Thanks!

here comes the delete system 32 jokes because everybody is too stupid to think of a new joke.

- Run regular disk clean ups (gets ride of old files, old downloads, etc) and disk defrag's (optimizes the way data is stored on your hard drive so it can read from it quicker) so your system is running as efficient as possible.

- Download anti virus/anti malware software to remove and bugs that may have infected your laptop.

- Back up your data and reformat (wipes the hd clean and start over with a fresh copy of windows and harddrive space). I do this yearly and I highly recommend doing it.

- Take your laptop to a computer store and get the internal components cleaned out (dust, dirt, etc) as those things can clog ventilation ports and fans which makes your computer run slower.

- Install more RAM to boost system speed. If you have 512mb now, consider upgrading to 2GB/3GB (or 4GB if you have a version of windows that can support 4GB). Laptop RAM isn't overly expensive and you should be able to snatch up 2gb for less then $100 bucks. Great investment IMO if you dont have that much RAM already.

- *Expensive* - Consider upgrading your harddrive to one with a higher RPM so data can be read/written faster which will speed up your computer.

...thats all i can think of right now off the top of my head...i'll add more later if i think of anything.

based on the fact its an 05, it probably uses ddr2 ram, so you can pick up a single slot card of 3 gb on ebay for way less than 100 dollars. Download Spybot Search and destroy, and if you dont have an antivirus, AVG antivirus is a great free one. Run both and do full system scans. Is your laptop overheating? if its 4 years old its probably accumulated a shitload of dust in the fans, which may cause it to overheat which would damage components.

If your a computer n00b than wiping clean the hardrive may be problematic, for now at least run a disk defrag, its quite simple and if you dont know how, google ftw.

And stop looking it porn, if you need to buy dvds, interwebs porn

which is why i said only go with 4gb if the laptop specs and his version of windows can handle it...

Ryno has a very good reply to your request, and I would only add that spy bots and root kits are processes running on your computer that can have a very adverse affect on system performance. Google "spy bot remover" and "root kit remover" and download the free spy bot remover and the Sophos root kit remover and run them. If you have not removed spy bots before, there may be hundreds of them. In a previous post, I explained these can be as simple as the old fashioned cookies or as pernicious as key loggers and who ever gives them to you is really trying to get data from how you use your computer and whre you go on the internet, and the more pernicious of these are stealing data straight off your system. I would also do an old fashioned de-frag; just go to your help files on your operating system and look up defragging for your system. Hope this helps.

hmm seems like your laptop is getting old. you may want to consider putting nitrous on the back to make it faster, or maybe even afterburners

Those might be too much juice for it...he should start with the reliable flame stickers first to make sure he doesn't blow it up then move on to NOS or afterburners if the flames run stable

i have an 8989 x 4870 NOS logo i can give you if you need it. should be more than big enough to print out and slap on your computer.

step 1.

Reformat.

step 2.

Don't download shit you don't trust, don't goto sites you don't trust.

step 3.

There isn't a step 3 if you follow 1 and 2.

if you do this there is good chance it might just be to fast... i would suggest some sort of drag shoot... just in case it takes off on you.

i still have all the old windows 3.1 installation diskettes (yes i said diskettes) all like 15 of them, bet that would scream on a dual core

Depending on the socket, you could always upgrade the processor... but if your asking how to make your laptop faster, you might be in for a trip.
