What are you looking to ride? I haven't bought a new bike in years, not sure how some of the companies have changed. I used to ride dk bikes. Great quality, I heard they went walmmart but not sure that's true at all. They have a nice mix of light dirt jumping bikes like the pack series with solid street bikes like the general lee.
Weight is going to be the biggest difference between dirt and street frames. The street bikes are more likely to come with 3 piece cranks though, although now every bike might have 3 piece, even if they're really shitty.
If your cranks aren't good you should buy some profile 3 piece cranks. You can find a chart in dans comp and some other magazines or online that has inseam to crank length so you buy the right size.
There are some real solid bike companies out there still. I'd check out dans comp so you get iinto more of the legit ones. IF you know anything about bikes you can buy most of the bikes without assembly for cheaper, but you have to put them together from scratch. Almost all bikes you can get assembled, they take them apart just enough to box them and ship them so you have minimal to do when they get to you.
Depending on what kind of shit your jumping you might need to get some stronger wheels. Triple walls are still some of the best out there.

Don't buy a kids 18 inch bike. You will grow, and you will waist money.
