West Canadian Ski Bum

Hi Everybody,

I'm thinking about breaking my personal boundary and lifepath and cheking for a year in Whistler or Banff. I just wanna know if somebody experienced the job opportunities in the intrawest Company ( holder and operator of Whistler/Blackcomb). Lift operator is the post that I wish to hold if I decide to leave my life for the time of a winter. I heard that intrawest make a tour of Cities to meet people interested in positions and interviewed them. The rate of succes ? Possibility to own a year ski pass free or purchased with rebate ........

And any other potential interesting information about choosing whistler or Banff even if My heart will probably go for Whistler.

If your going to whis, DON'T work for intrawest or whoever owns the mountain. They do give you a free pass but all the jobs are day work so you'll get to use it alot less, also they pay the worst in the whole town. Also you don't want to have your job, pass and accomodation all tied together (ex you lose one you lose em all) Its sooo easy to get jobs in whistler, try to get one at a restaurant so you can work at night, you will have to buy a pass but you do get a discount pretty much everywhere you work and you'll make more money in a restauant. The only hard part is finding a place to live.

lifties are not ski bums.

sorry, seriously though - the best way to move somewhere and get a job is to do exactly that. You want to live in Whistler and work? Move to Whistler and look for work.

dont work as a liftie, you will just hate your life as you watch stoked riders scream about how great the powy deepness is while you clean their chair for them to do another lap. just move to whistler (banff is pretty but is not even nearly as good as whistler for shredding) and look for a night job. if you are willing to be a liftie, you should consider either being a bartender or server (if you have the experience). otherwise, being a night cleaner is a good gig actually, pays pretty well, usually all sorts of leftover goodies from hotel guests and you get all your days off to shred.

are you kidding me? im not defending Intrawest but i had a retail job for 4 years with them and skied minimum 5 days a week every one of those years. GLC, Merlins, dustys...all restaurants/bars you can do ALL night shifts at...plus your pass

Banff is cool, a little more down to earth and still has some great skiing. Agreed that lifties don't get that much ski time, normally get a few ride breaks but only enough for a few laps.

Thanks EveryBody for these precious infos ....... I will considering working as a night cleaner or a dish cleaner :) I just have to figure where to live but I got a year left for this .....

Good decision mate, I'm applying for my 12month working visa in december to do the same thing so all of this information is great!
