there's something bugging about this fall

I’m guessing in 100 years all the mountains in Mid-Atlantic will be closed permanently. There used to be a few who would be open the same duration they are here now with NO snow machines. Now they can barely hit that mark with them.

We are already at 193% snowfall average for the year, maybe nature just needs a nap after blowing its load in october.

Where are you guys shredding this winter?

Kirkwood! I usually ski at Sierra buuuut... Yeah.

Probably will hit Northstar for park and Heavenly when convenient/ not crowded too, but mainly Kirkwood.

Right on. Kirkwood on pow days is just the best. I’ve skied practically nips deep there and it was bananas!

Got an 8.5 foot storm 2 or 3 years ago. Only like 40 cars got in before the pass shut again.

Shit was deep af. Almost scary if you fell. Worth getting stuck a couple hours to leave waiting for pass to open.

I know that feeling. You’re super pumped but a little on edge cause the snow is like a huge writhing force around you. Sounds epic

Don’t wanna turn everything into a global warming thread but we are definitely seeing global warming in action this year ?‍♂️?‍♂️

The trajectory doesn’t feel good, no doubt about it. However, the biking is still good, at least in the valley!

Has it snowed and all the rain washed it away or has it literally just been raining?

Hmm does it rain more on the mountains there vs Tahoe or about the same? I would think Tahoe more but I know there's not as much elevation on the mtns there.

We got some snow and then 5 inches of rain

Really been a bitch lately, I haven't even really been able to work at Boreal. We got that one opening weekend on halloween but been way too dry since. Hoping enough snow can be made for this weekend.

Also big rip for all of us Sierra at tahoe boys never thought I'd have a season where I couldn't go there. Literally skied there since 2007/8ish. Driving through there was crazy forsure with the highway somewhat affected but sierra absolutely scorched.

believe it when i see it

It's snowing now at least and we pushed out some of the lower mountain piles. Hopefully we till before the weekend in case it gets moist even if we're not opening. Just so it firmed up and drains.

Ughhhh man I know. The west bowl is totally toast. Like, literally a dozen trees left out of a thousand. They might actually open this season though.

I am sort of hoping it will be positive in some way, like the west bowl will be fun as a big open bowl. Would be awesome to keep the dead trees but they probably can't. Luckily there are still great tree areas that did survive. But, it will be a shock to see it so different.

So many good days at Sierra, such an under rated mountain. They are cool af to season pass holders too. Best days you literally just ski through powder and trees from top to bottom and barely touch the groomers. Or it's spring and they have all of their features up and soak in the sun and just have hella fun skiing and shit

I took this photo a year ago today :(

Our winters start late, but there's usually at least a little bit by Thanksgiving. This heat has been brutal for snowmaking. Apart from a little bit of north-aspect snow about 8000 feet, our AR event a few weeks ago has completely melted. Let's hope December has some weather in store for us

That is quite a contrast! Which lift were you on when you took this?

i thought we'd never see it. any leads on an actual open date?

Nope, but the clues we have are...

Stay warm and dry from now until the 6th

Small storm around the 6th bringing colder & active pattern

Cold weather 7th - 8th good for snowmaking

Stronger, colder storm coming 9th-10th

11th & on, very cold active pattern for forseeable future.

My bet is the big resorts opening the 10th or 11th, and any other resort to be open by the 18th.

Boreal is already open cus they are snow blowing maniacs

Don’t they have some European snow making room/system that costs a ton and can create snow at higher temps?

Your comment made me do some research into this. You're totally right. They have a state-of-the-art system from a brand called TechnoAlpin. It uses refrigerant in the guns to chill the water. Here's a good article from when it was installed a few years ago

I'm sure their smaller footprint and large reservoir are a big help too. Less terrain and more water means they can create runs faster than the bigger hills in town

Dude I was checking their webcams when they were making snow. Like, big fucking snow guns every 20 ft along the trails. When the webcam zoomed to the right, it was just a big fucking cloud of white you couldn't even see anything lmao

Look at these fuckers. No wonder they are the only ones open.

Rye....in 100 years Mother Earth will be a cold dead rock, after flaming out after 75.

Ahh, don't be such a downer. Way I see it, when miami beach goes underwater and rich people start flipping their shit, that their beachfront properties all become worthless, all of a sudden we get all the funding in the world to fight climate change, big breakthrough comes thru a la futurama dropping enourmous ice cube in the ocean, and we reverse climate change and everyone lives happily ever after.

Ok but seriously I'm actually somewhat qualified on this subject, we are going in the right direction as of now, and it's definitely not physically impossible to reverse climate change. We are getting better over the years, even if it's two steps forward and one step back, it's still progress. I trust in our scientists and engineers, we may fuck over several areas of the earth along the way but we are a long long loooong ways away from Earth turning into mars. Earth turns into a hot* dead rock on the conditions that we actually lose too much CO2, from the increased heat of the sun (the sun gets bigger as it dies) breaking down the CO2 and burning up the ozone layer. Then plants can't produce oxygen and everything dies. But yeah that shouldn't happen until the sun starts to die around a billion years from now.

In any case, Tahoe not getting snow this time of year is actually pretty normal, we are due for some big storms, yes climate change has shifted our ski seasons (march is becoming the new February) but they are far from gone. Everything is a balance, if it's extra hot here, well it's extra cold in the north and the east, and if it's warm there it's cold here. that's why it's climate change more accurately than global warming.

In the meantime, the dirt is all time! Just shredded dry pond a couple days ago, the new Lincoln bypass in carson today and will smash jackass laps all day Saturday. Might as well get it while it’s good

? If it’s hot in x then it’s cold in y? I don’t think that’s how this works. Average monthly temperatures across US cities have slowly been rising every 10 years without fail since at the least 1950 and the trend isn’t even close to appearing to be slowing down or heading in the opposite direction dude.

I do agree though and see what you’re saying in the sense that once some crazy stuff starts happening, that’s when we’ll actually start to take it seriously enough. I think it’ll be too late for so many mountains at that point though.

Temperatures on average have been rising, yes. My point is for instance if it's warm and dry in California and we are stuck in a high pressure zone, that means it's cold and wet in near the low pressure zone. Right now it's up north in Alaska and Canada through to the east coast. It's not really a debatable topic, it's just how the weather works. Here is a visual.. temperature contour of north America now (while we are high and dry) vs Dec 10th (when the storm is predicted). Keep note on where that green belt is and also how a low pressure zone which is currently near Hawaii shifts to the west coast and a high pressure zone builds in off the west coast of Canada causing the low pressure area to be over California.

In simple terms, Hawaii cold move to California. Now Hawaii warm, but California cold.
