As of noon today I now get paid to ski. My friends have already started calling me 'pro' but I wouldn't go that far. It's pretty cool, getting paid to ski. Hope it all works out, any tips? Thanks

regional sponsorship. That usually doesn't mean money. How much are you getting paid?

How Much? I really don't know...it wasn't all that important to me when I found out. It's not enough to live on, but plenty enough to ski on. And the free skis and clothing help too.

_ski_bum: the quote is this...

Lloyd Christmas: I'm talking about someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine, where the women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin about a little town called Aspen.

Harry Dunn: I don't know Lloyd, the French are assholes.

not how u wrote it...

good day mate,

lets put another shrimp on the barby'

'ooooo thats what I like'

'what? you like to suck beer bottles'- hot striper to my buddy after she pulled his bottle out of her mouth.

i wouldn't necessarily call a regional sponsorship a professional skiing job. I and many others in michigan are sponsored regionally.

peace, and good luck tyler!

I don't consider myself a pro, not even close...=P thats just what my friends were calling me, lol

se7en (umm... i think thats how you spell it)

I'm curious to know exactly what kind of pay youre getting. Pretty rude to ask how much, which i'm not asking, but are you on a contract with those companies ? If so, what are the terms of the contract ?

If you're getting paid on a regional level, I'm very impressed. Right now I'm skiing for, well pretty much, Smiths B-Team, and I'm on nothing else but an incentive contract with a few other terms. Basically product (which they do a damn good job of holding up of). Same with all the other shit... Its tuff to land a few bucks as a retainer, let alone have enough to 'ski' off of.

Fill me in dude ! Congrats !

hahahaaha, why brag on forum that you get paid to ski. just makes you look like a fool.

'i can derralick my own balls thank you very much!' derek zoolander

Garret, as far as Smith goes, I get nadda...except for a pair of goggles here and there. I'm not exactly what I'm making from Salomon, but when I find out I'll let you know. Later

Ahh Geez.. you guys let Se7en have his fun. Nothings better then getting free stuff or money from what you love to do.

gretegirl, thanks but I don't think anyone was really making fun or trying to disprove me, just asking questions, to tell you the truth, I too would like to know what I'm gonna get paid...hopefully it's enough that I can quit my stupid job(probably not)

Anyways, thanks!

yo garret, what you doing this weekend. At boyne highlands in the upper lower penninsula of michigan there will be some crazy stuff going down all weekend. a two day festival full of jam sessions with around 50 of the best skiers in the midwest. just seeing if you might be interested. If you are in ottawa or near there it will only be like a 10 hour drive or something....let me know..peace and good luck with your sponsorships, from experience i know the ski industry is such a bitch right now and companies aren't really giving up what they could.

peace,

scott

Hey Scott !

How are things in the midwest this year ? Hope not as brutal as out here in the north east.

Thanks kindly for the heads up on the events this weekend. I believe I heard about the big event coming up... Isn't Iberg and them supposed to be filming ? Anyways, I would love to come up, in fact i was considering a few months back going with my buddy Corey Grinnell, but I have my first and worst exam coming up this monday. Following that I've got about 4 other finals crammed up during the week.

This winter has been ridiculously shitty for me. Between snow conditions, money, school, friends and just about every other thing you can imagine, I've been out actually skiing next to nothing. Its weird.

I'm sure you can appreciate how tuff it is to break into the industry; thus the theme of this whole thread of messages. It's pretty hard to be supported very well. I'm lucky I saddled up with some great companies like Smith who know whats up, have great people to deal with in the company, and product that is inching closer and closer to the best out there. ALot of companies are being gay, and the problem is that it starts with direct communication from athlete to rep. Do you believe that someone from a company will convince you to sign on with them, and then virtually neglect you all winter ? Simple stuff like that is ruining the fun in the sport. Yes skiing will always be fun, but ask yourself this ( cause i know there is alot of people reading this saying 'cmon, quit whining cause you're not being helped out by companies') - How fun is this sport when you pay stupid retarded prices to do it ? Look at any prices these days and its ridiculous. As a college student, I can assure you there is no way I can afford to. Hell, I can't even afford the gas in the car to get up to the hill. Granted, I'm supported product wise and a little bit of extra help from the real companies that care like Smith, but it all boils down skiing is VERY hard to break through in. Its either black or white in this sport, those who are extremely good will be well off in the sport, but those who are just fans through those who are on the verge of breaking through its all the same struggle.

whats a regional sponsership?

nicely said. Yea its called the SPRING BOARD MEETING and is going to be crazy. i haven't heard if Iberg is coming or not....that would be nice. I know ryan schmies and some of the midwest allstars will be there. Basically its a jam festival with tons of skiers and photographers/filmers. It will be cool. I completely understand the whole exam thing. I am in a bind with school myself. It sucks! well talk to ya later...

peace,

scott

Ok I have to clarify things a little here. Yes its hard to make it as a skier in this industry and a lot of people get dicked around. Reps have just as much crap to deal with. If a rep is hooking someone up locally they are usually paying the cost for that rider's gear. Also if the industry seems stingy lately its because everyone has to be. Everywhere east of the Mississippi the industry has been hurting. Despite record snowfalls in some areas, the snow was not on the ground for very long. The late start to winter killed shops which in turn led to them buying less for the following season which leaves reps high and dry because there are less sales to be made to shops because no one wants to buy anything at Vegas in January when winter is just starting to roll in. Larger companies stepped up and pressured SIA to move the trade show up. Another reason why I think companies are starting to lack flowing gear to skiers is the plethora of companies starting up. Everytime you turn around someone is starting up a new company. Everyone is jumping on the freeskiing bandwagon and its thinning out the market. All of this leads up to lack of funds and sales which leads to crap for sponsorships. Similar thing happened to snowboarding about 4-6 years ago. To many companies, not enough money. Tons of riders got dropped and tons of companies went under. Skiing can't be too far behind (in my opinion).

Tell 'em Graves sent ya

I hear ya Graves, and you bring up some good points.

But to clarify my post, which I should have to begin with -

The companies that I have dealt with that neglect to even return e-mails or phone calls, are fairly large and hold a good chunk of the market. Further, I am dealing with these companies on a national or coastal level. I find it hard to fathom, and to be honest I take offence to it, that they cannot deal with an athlete a little more personally. Regarding regional stuff, and reps supplying athletes from their wallet, you are bang on the mark, and it is a struggle.

Second, you bring up another good point about the additional companies springing up and thus providing competition. But to play the devils advocate for second, and what I find to be a more realistic observation of how, especially this type of market, things work, think of it this way: Ski equipment and other associated product is a competitive market where (and especially nowadays and in this genre of skiing) image is ALOT and it is more or less vital to appeal to youthful trends and those following them. Even further, its to a point where the athletes or those who are doing the advertising. Struggling with the competition should provide more incentive to get your product out and known.

Take for example Line skis, they hold an asshairs size of the market, yet they are doing by and far the best job of bettering themselves under the scrutinizing eyes of buyers and fans alike. They've gone from ashy to classy, as one notorious b.i.g. would put it. Catch my drift ? Simply put they have the best, most trend setting ad campaign out every year. Cudos (sp?) to them.
