Welding Brakes?

So i was just bending my pivot brakes to fit over a wider ski. i got one set done fine and then measured out the second to bend them. So i put it in a vise and i simply hit it with a hammer to cause it to bend. the problem that occurred is the brake had to much stress on and it snapped(both legs of on brake did)

So now my question. Has anyone ever welded brakes or tired to weld them? I have the resources to weld and i can weld but i wasn't sure if it has been done.

Also does anyone know the type of metal brakes are made???? of (specifically pivots) because i was looking at it after it broke and it didn't look like cold rolled steel it looked more like an alloy.

thanks for the help NS

i think.. i may be wrong.. but i think tht that would just make em rly weak and they'll just break again. but if u can get it welded for free, then its worth a shot

Terribly incorrect, given you have the correct equipment I'd say it's definitely doable and if you do it well it should be fine, but that's if it is in fact steel. You could try brazing, but that'd be pretty weak.

hitting with a hammer is not a good idea at all...use a hollow pipe and after securing them tight as fuck in the vise just slowly bend using the pipe. any blunt trauma to the brakes will just break them

and welding would make them super weak

i may also be wrong, but i heard somewhere that welding actually makes it stronger like a healed broken bone

yeah i should of used a pipe didnt think of that

thanks for the help everyone

and i can definitely weld

i can tig weld which is used for aircraft so there isnt a problem of the size it was just the material i wasnt sure about

ill try it

thread jack. i broke one leg off one of my fks brakes a week ago and i was wondering if i could gorilla glue or liquid nail it back on? is is possible and strong enough?

i dont know is that would work

i dont think it would be strong enough for the application

im try to weld them this week so i will reply on whether brakes can be welded or not

Update

It is possible to weld pivot brakes

they are simply galvanized steel and i was able to weld them using tig

there solid now and legit ill try to get pictures up

Yeah, with a solid weld, the metal should break before the weld...be careful with the galvanized though, toxic fumes...You'll be fine just for one small weld though, "I Think" haha

it was a minor weld so the fumes weren't so bad

i welded galvanized and stainless and fair amounts of it with no breathing system

you just do short welds and have good ventilation and your fairly set
