Wearing a hoodie will kill you... apparently

Geraldo Rivera provoked outrage on Friday when he said that slain teenager Trayvon Martin was partially responsible for his death because he was wearing a hoodie. The Fox News host later revealed that even his own son was dismayed by the comments.

Speaking on Friday's "Fox and Friends," Rivera said, ""I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was."

Martin was unarmed when he was shot dead by a self-appointed neighborhood watch volunteer named George Zimmerman in late February. His death has become a national tragedy, fueled by the police's controversial handling of the case.

After making his original comments about Martin's hoodie on Friday morning, Rivera weighed in again in a series of tweets. He revealed that one of his sons disagreed. "My own son just wrote to say he's ashamed of my position re hoodies," hetweeted. Rivera also told Politico that his son, Gabriel, "broke [his] heart" and had said that he had "gone viral for all the wrong reasons."

However, he maintained that Martin's hoodie was to blame for his death. He deniedthat he was "blaming the victim" and called it "common sense" for minorities to avoid wearing hoodies. He said that he was "reminding minority parents of the risk that comes with being a kid of color in America."

Rivera made his original comments to Brian Kilmeade, Steve Doocy and guest host Juliet Huddy. He said that he believed George Zimmerman should be "investigated to the fullest extent of the law" and "prosecuted" if criminally liable, but blamed Martin's parents for letting him go outside wearing a hoodie.

"But I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies," Rivera insisted.

When asked to clarify his remarks, Rivera said that he cautioned his own son against wearing hoodies. He explained, "When you, when you see a kid walking — Juliet — when you see a kid walking down the street, particularly a dark skinned kid like my son Cruz, who I constantly yelled at when he was going out wearing a damn hoodie or those pants around his ankles. Take that hood off, people look at you and they — what do they think? What’s the instant identification, what’s the instant association?"

"Uh-oh," remarked Doocy, who nodded in agreement.

Rivera argued that avoiding certain types of attire was a necessary deterrent against racial profiling. "It’s those crime scene surveillance tapes. Every time you see someone sticking up a 7-11, the kid is wearing a hoodie," Rivera said. "You have to recognize that this whole stylizing yourself as a gangster, you're gonna be a gangster wannabe? Well, people are gonna perceive you as a menace."

He stressed that Martin was an "innocent" and "wonderful" kid who "didn't deserve to die." However, he reiterated, "I'll bet you money, if he didn't have that hoodie on, that nutty neighborhood watch guy wouldn't have responded in that violent and aggressive way."

Rivera prefaced his "Fox and Friends" appearance with similar comments on Twitter on Thursday night. He had tweeted, "His hoodie killed Trayvon Martin as surely as George Zimmerman," and "I'm trying to save lives like Trayvon's-Parents Alert: hoodies can get your kid killed."

Moments before he died, Martin was on the phone with his girlfriend. She recalledhim saying that he put his hoodie up because Zimmerman had been following him.

Geraldo Rivera's tweets:

What an idiot...Simply wearing a hoodie is not enough (in my opinion) for someone to profile you to the extent of using deadly force and thinking you are a "gangster" or "menace".

Wearing a hoodie won't get you killed, rocking gang colors will.

Howerver wearing a hoodie with your hood up could put a flag up with cops/law enforcement. Hell in my area, lots of minorities just get stopped walking around after dark.

Racial profiling is still rampant in our law enforcement.

If Zimmerman is cleared of charges there are gonna be riots.

And if you have a mustache you are probably a pedophile.

he must have never worn a hoodie, there so useful, not a jacket, not a shirt, but that perfect medium, inb4 hes a racist, had he not been wearing a hoodie he would have blamed the t shirt, next the jeans and then the shoes. FUCK GERALDO JUST ANOTHER JUDGEMENTAL POS

holy fuck, thats the biggest load of horseshit. Rivera should not be allowed in public., nor the internet.

That's ridiculous! If Zimmerman can't be free of charges, he blatantly shot and killed a boy who did nothing wrong.

Don't want to start a shitstorm here, but he is partially right. With today's stereotypes, wether you like it or not, most people will be a bit more nervous if the person coming down the sidewalk in front of you at night is a colored person wearing a hoodie with the hood on.

Don't get me wrong, what he said was insanely exaggerated, the hoodie really responsible for the killing? Lulz. But he is right, if we were all completely honest with each other, many older people would approve the statement that black teenagers should be discouraged to wear a hoodie with the hood over their head at late hours. Sight, this is a very touchy subject right here, racist for sure, but I don't think we should just shove it away and act as if we never had the though running through our head from time to time.

Pretty sure it was raining outside and during the daytime. The kid was a preppy, short, and a round face. He looked like the most harmless kid out there.

It's not the hoodie that's the problem, it's the ignorant, uptight, frightened assholes who feel threatened by everything. They should have been talking about what is wrong with society rather than talking about an article of clothing. Fuckin idiots.

I was mostly referring to Rivera's statement about black/latinos wearing hoodies. In no way I'm backing the killer, obviously.

why americans think everyone is out to get them is beyond me. just fuckin relax. if somebody really wants to kill you, they probably can and will do it. so arming yourself out the ass and shooting at shit in a frightened fit of rage isn't helping protect your or anybody else's safety.

some dude who's been in a car accident staggers to your door and starts banging on it at 3am because he desperately needs medical attention and is moments from dying, what do you do go downstairs and shoot him cause you thought he was a BAD GUY COMING TO KILL YOU?! fuckin shit needs to change. i wonder how many "accidental" deaths there are in the US because some idiot killed someone over nothing before even finding out what the fuck was going on.

I saw a report on this incident awhile ago, and I was outraged. The kid went to go get candy for the store, some racist asshole neighbourhood watch guy thought felt threatened and shot him, without confronting him or anything. When the paramedics arrived, he has skittles in his pockets, that's it. The hoodie thing is the worst argument ever. It's the same as saying all girls that get raped are asking for it by wearing "slutty" clothes.

I live about 20 mins from where this happened. Its unbelievable when you listen to the police calls and everything that this guy is not in prison yet.

Also people are dong "Hoodie Walks" around the country as well as here. Thought it was a pretty awesome idea to honor Martin and show how the killers thought process is fucked.

i admit that it got slightly less retarded to read when he kind of explained what he meant.

still a nutjob in either direction.

As lil wayne once said " I don't shoot back, because I shoot first"

I know canada doesnt have these, but in the hood, or areas near the hood, people get burglarized at gunpoint. you can be a bitch(canadian) and just let the burglar take everything. Or you can be a man(american) and shoot at that motherfucker and protect whats yours.

Now, an idiot is an idiot, and those people shouldnt be allowed to have guns. but responsible, safe gunowners dont make the news because they arent shooting innocent people. the negative exceptions make the news because their mistakes are so heinous.

outside of the cheap labor, southern belles, and SEC football i would be very much passive if the south tried to secede again.

the problem is it's all or nothing. you can't objectively determine who's an idiot and who isn't. you cant say "well we'll issue you a gun, because we believe that you'll be responsible, but not you because you're probably stupid". either everyone gets one (idiots included) or nobody does.

in the scenario where everyone has a gun:

- during criminal acts you can be protected. maybe you get lucky, flash a piece, and scare someone off. but on the flipside, maybe someone was just about to take your wallet and leave, but now that you flash a piece at him, it's life or death, so you've escalated a very minor crime to a "somebody has to go" situation. is that really the best thing to do? personally, i'd rather be unarmed and trust my ability to talk my way out of someone killing me rather than pull a gun on him and start firing, perhaps getting myself killed.

in the scanario where no one has a gun:-

- during criminal acts you are not protected, however being unarmed is probably BETTER than being armed as imentioned above. being armed doesn't guarantee that you're protecting yourself, it puts the other guy into defense mode and now it's a fight to the death where if you were unarmed, he'd probably just grab your wallet and run. plus there's all the accidental deaths with guns.

bad news.

I think what he's saying here is that having a gun makes you more of a bitch. Learn how to fight with your hands like men, weapons are for pussies.

thats absolutely fucking retarded, how ignorant do you have to be to say and stand behind that statement

That pisses me off so much. All of us wear hoodies all the time, none of us are asking to get killed any more than this kid was.

He went out to buy skittles, is the Mars Inc company at fault because their product is the reason he left the house? No, obviously not, the blame should be 100% on Zimmerman. He stalked, caught, and shot an unarmed teenager who wasn't even doing anything. Hoodies dont kill people, crazy people with guns kill people.
