WE CAN'T SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT

or can we?

As skiers, global warming will affect our sport. Not to mention the animals and all the life on earth. This is screwed up. It seems most of us are too lazy to change the way we treat the environment on our own.

What are some sustainable things we can do?

HOW ARE WE GOING TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT?

not saying individuals shouldn't do stuff but it's gonna take more than just individuals changing small parts of their lives. The governements need to get involved more

it's comments like that that only hurt the situation. of course you can do something; recycle, carpool, turn off your lights, ride the bus, etc. etc. you don't need the government to hold your hand and guide you through sustainable measures any individual can do.

if everyone pitches in we can deff mak big changes but 70-80% of all emmisions are from factories and transportation so half the people have to chang and half the government has to change

oh yeah, snow is now falling in antarctica, which was previously frozen rock and dessert. Theres some sick mountain ranges in antarctica

how sick does this face look

the point he was trying to make was that it really wont do that much when a small group of people who actually care about global warming recycle and shit. I 100% agree that the government needs to step in and start putting regulations on stuff and forcing companies to make better products that use less energy and polute less.

for the record i always recycle and shut off lights etc.

the ozone replenishes itself! all we need to do is stop slaughtering it. maybe if hybrids and shit like that weren't so expensive it would be easier... but for now unless you are pretty well off its hard to live a really low-impact lifestyle without giving up a lot of luxuries.

no more what I was saying is that most people aren't going to change themselves because you want them to. If 5%-10% of the population changes, which is probably about how much did/will, that's not going to be enough. If the government steps in and makes big buisnesses comply then we'll make much, much more progress.

The worlds cattle population warms the earth more than the worlds people population and peoples actions, seriously it's a true fact. If you want to do something about global warming, eat less meat.

The Earth warms and cools in cycles, cycles that can be massive and carry on for hundreds or thousands of years. So now that we have gained the technology in the past 50 years or so to accuratley measure and compare temperatures around the world, we are suddenly scared shitless that it .5 degree warmer in some places.

And that is another thing, IT'S NOT THE ENTIRE EARTH that is getting warmer. There are some select densely populated urban areas where the average temperature is rising slightly, but that is because of the large amounts of people, cars, industry, concrete, and asphalt that is present in these areas. Many other places, in fact the majority of places on Earth are not getting warmer. Infact, the oceans are not only not getting warmer, there are large areas that are getting cooler. And considering the fact that over 2/3 of the Earth is oceans, I don't believe that we have too much too be worried about.

The global warming thing is up in the air for me-I hear too much from both sides. However I do think people need to treat the environment better. For major changes, we need more government involvement but on a small level just walk/bike more, carpool, if you can afford it drive more fuel efficient cars/hybrids, throw your trash away, etc.

You are SO out to lunch bra, get your facts straight. You talk about cattle and the release of methane into the atmosphere, and say that alone accounts for more damage than all of the actions of humankind and their use and misuse of technology over the course of history? Wow is all I can say to that.

Then, you drop a 'fact' about urban heat islands, and how the earth isn't actually getting warmer? You didn't stop to think that scientists around the world wouldn't have taken urban heat islands into account when discussing increases in fucking recorded average temperatures globally? And quickly, tell me what the temperature rising in Manhattan due to the albedo of the pavement and skyscrapers has to do with the fucking ice caps breaking off into the ocean there, wise guy? Last time I checked, Antarctica is FAR from urban, and it's where global climate change is more noticeable than nearly anywhere else in the world.

You're right about one thing, that not everywhere in the world is experiencing increases in average temperatures... but that has to do with microclimates, as a result of global climate change and the world becoming, on average, warmer. It all comes back to that, and people like yourself who choose to be willingly ignorant of what is happening around you make me sick.

global warming may not be bad for skiing, because global warming is coupled with global wettening. energy from the sun is what drives storms, so warmer weather means more intense winter storms, which is good for skiers.

am i right? or am i right?

two words, that mean alot to skiers on the west coast... freezing levels.

precipitation means shit all if it isn't of the snow variety.

everyone do your part. ride a bike when you can. take a bus when you can. etc...

people who are saying "one person won't do anything" are right, one person won't do anything. that's why everyone needs to do a little something. that will help the cause imensely.

well i just got back from california and all i can say is that global warming is a serious threat to our sport. it isnt a coincidence that there is no snow and it is 60+ degrees outside. Something must be done. Do your part and turn off the lights when you leave a room, and conserve energy in any way you can think of.

In my most honest opinion i feel that the future of skiing is bleak.

if a large volcanoe were to explode annually we would not have any climate issues. thats why there is a proposal where we just like put tons of sulfure into the atmosphere every year and it will pretty much be like a volcanoe errupting. because the sulfure cools the earth. but the problem with this is that things like acid rain and bad effects like that. and also people fight that doing this is just a solution so that people dont have to change their lives and how they live in order to keep the atmosphere healthy. i dont know if that makes sense. but this global warming stuff is pretty interesting

exactly, no matter what we do now our lives are not going to be affected. its what we do now that is going to end up being good or bad for our children/grandchildren

youre right, but before the freezing levels completley fuck up, there should be some really good seasons. cold air doesnt have the capacity to hold moisture because it's more dense

ever hear of sierra cement? Those guys get like 10feet in 2 weeks, but skiers are still only into their ankles because that snow is so firm. Warm temps aren't so good for light dry powder.

the argument doesn't matter anyway. We need to do something fast about the environment fast. It seems like the government and the corporations have the power and we need to influence them. Changing your lightbulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs(CFLs) or the new LED bulbs will help. According to US environmental defense, if every household in the U.S. was to change one light bulb to a cfl, the change could reduce pollution as much as taking 800,000 cars off the road. It would also keep a lot of new coal power plants from being needed and built.

if everyone lived within a mile of their work/school and drove only when needed that would help. also something that skiers can do is carpool or take the bus every time you go to the mountain (most already do). full cars everytime would help more than you would think. all of the carbon dioxide released into our atmosphere from just driving cars up to the mountain is alot.

the point about cattle was a valid one but not correct. in australia (huge beef industy) it contributes 15 % of greenhouse emmisions. so its still a large amount. but you arnt going to stop consuming beef! no way. it is large global companys that have the largest impact, hybrid cars should be heavrly subsidised but it will impact car manufatures adversly. at least 25% of profits will be lost to spare parts and breakdowns using hybrid. government does not want this industry to slow. in australia we have obsene amounts of coal. we want to make money off that coal, we already make fuckloads. without this export our country will fall into a ressesion. (we push Nuclear cos we have 75% of the world urainium) if countrys like USA China had a push to renewables (ie solar, wind ect) which may be slitly more expensive. who benifits? not big bussiness, not the government, you ?? (not really, increased cost of living), but THE PLANET and our future generations. sure something has to be done and it has to be done by YOU! not in the way you think, by lighting candles and not watching TV. a revolution must ouccur. YOU must act not in making small changes but by forcing governments to act, make governments remember who they represent and what those people want, ask yourself what you want??

Only eat your own poop and pee. Therefore eliminating the need to feed the 12 Billion people of the world on half the agricultural land mass in 2100.

Also. Probably the main contricutor to global warming is aircraft creating artificial clouds which trap heat far more than any other greenhouse gas. So dont fly, simply travel everywhere by unicycle.

wow.. lol. good way of puttin it.. but where are we gonna get one? and how r ppl gonna build that thing? besides if ppl could do that, wouldnt someone already come up w/ that?

On another tangent, we feed a great deal of the worlds usable grain to cows. If more people stopped eating meat, there would be more grain to go around. That would not solve the distribution problems, but would increase supply.

Being kind to the environment is not hard. Things such as turning off unnecessary lights or recycling are easy to do.

However, the main problems that face our society are that these simple concepts are not carried out on a massive scale, a scale large enough to make a serious positive impact. Another huge problem is the reliance on gasoline. The biggest obstacle to change in this case is the massive petroleum and auto industries, who are certainly against changing the planet's fuel source.

The real bottom line in all big changes is money. When Americans and people all over the globe are hit hard by gas prices, around $5 a gallon, then people will start to want alternatives. The funding for alternative energy research is miniscule compared to the millions wasted on gasolene every day. When a clean alternative exists, we can move away from gas.

the retarded thing about the cattle comment is that it compares emissions from cattle to emissions from human activity-- cattle ranching is a human activity! those farting cows were put there by humans to feed humans.

Acctually I heard from a National Geographic magazine that the guy who invented the technology to read the thickness of the ozone layer said that it's too late to save the planet, we've already done too much damage and within 10 years skin cancer will be something like 4 times more common.

Now I've also heard other things like in 10 years if we don't do anything it'll be too late but this isn't just some random guy he's got some credibility behind him

auto indrustries wouldn't mind changing fuel sources, the problem is that it isn't exactly easy to discover new fuel sources that will work as effeciently as gas becuase gas enginges are so easy to build now and gas stations exist nearly everywhere. most big car companies are trying to work on new alternative sources like hydrogen and all that hoohah, but you cant just change it overnight.

and $5 a gallon wont be enough to sway people any more, considering that many people outside the US are already paying way more than that...

im not gonna stop driving my suv that gets about a mile to the gallon and I will probably always own an suv.

the ozone layer is sompthing totally differant to golbal warming caused by CO2 but yeah im not sure of the facts on ozone at the moment it cant be good though. the outlook on timespan for the point of no return is still highly debated throughout science with as small as 10 years up to 100 but 99% of scientests agree it is happening, most of those agree it is caused by human intervention. this isnt a lecture, just a point that people shouldnt always belive media ect, rather go and do some reserch themselves before making a educated desision about somthing very complex.

not really. I don't know that much about greenpeace, but i think they have caught several illegal whaling ships.

You know what sucks? People who think they need suvs and don't. I love in Winter Park, CO (350" snow annually), and i drive a motherfu@#in honda accord. You ever notice how many people who don't even live close to the mountains drive huge suvs and don't give a shit about the environment or apparently the money out of their wallets that's going to the arabs. And is it just me, or do most of those people look like they aren't very active. I feel bad for these people and bad for everyone else their pollution is affecting.
