Watching powder vs park

I had a thought the other day about why i prefer watching park skiing to powder skiing and i just curious if anybody else agrees with me on this

first, powder is amazing to ski, dont get me wrong. and watching backcountry skiing like thalls massive and hunting yeti and that sorta stuff is fuckin sweet as hell but it makes me want to go ski that stuff so bad, but then i realize that I cant. I dont have access to snomobiles or a cat or endless lines of pillows and pow, and so then i kinda just feel like im watching somebody that i cant relate to. big mountain is even worse. watching sage rip down ak mountains is insane, but i know that i will never be there doing that, so it just kinda seems unreal and non-personal.

but when i watch park skiing, i see what these kids do and think about how i could do that. all i need is some rails and jumps, which most mountains have. i can relate to park skiers because i can actually go out there and attempt that stuff, and it makes watching it much more enjoyable.

maybe this is just me, but i was just thinking about the differences between watching pow and park skiing.

call me a loser or whatnot its just my thoughts. any1 care to share theirs?

i prefer skiing powder over park, but i'd rather watch someone throwing down in the park than slaying powder.

its easy to see where youre coming from with park being way easy=ier to see a lot of trick and such but the backcountry is easy to get out into. for about a thousand dollars you could take an avalanche course and get avi gear and trekking gear and never want to buy a ski pass again.

idk too me park skiing just strikes my interest a little more. i do like to ski pow i think its awesome but i guess being from the midwest and never having skied powder i cant really know

Powder and soft snow are for losers, permafried tele hippies, and touring nerds from Seattle with tight goretex. I'm never leaving the park. Ever.

I'm totally opposite. I cant relate to park, because I've never had a full season at a mountain with a park for the full season. Pow though, I usually have quite regularly, except for this season, and the lines can be similar, like the pillows and drops. Park though, nope.

So I usually like pow and big mountain movies more, like the TGR movies are always my favorite. Although I really like Rage and PBP because they do a little of everything.

I highly recommend moving to a place that does have tons of snow and huge pillows. Just try not to destroy yourself in the park between now and then.

I love skiing powder but pretty much every AK shot in a movie drives me crazy, they are sort of repetitive and boring. Tree skiing and pillow lines get me really stoked because its something that I can relate to, I ski stuff somewhat like that every weekend theres POW at alpental. Park skiing catches my eyes the most, I think its because I cant do SHIT in the park and it gets me really stoked on trying my hand at park skiing.

When I was young I loved park. Couldn't get enough of it. Now that I am a little older I find my appreciation for shredding pow has grown. Any skier can learn to slay a rail because that rail will always be there, perfectly set up, ready to be hiked again and again. A pow day never lasts. You get one shot at a line or a cliff or a turn. That's it. You have to be on top of your game or you will get bucked. I enjoy watching pow because pow is never the same.

you ski alpy/central?

meh ya we've had a lot of pow lately but nothing like in the movies. its just so like holy shit why cant i be there doing that, but i cant. when i see park skiing, i CAN be doing, er, attempting, that.

I also think that park is more fun to watch. It just seems quicker and better for filming. However I would rather be in the pow than the park.

in my opinion, i can watch anything as long as it's not suuuuper repetitive...
if it's just endless ak lines or pow turns, it gets kinda boring to me after a while
whereas if there's a jump, or rail, or bc jump... i can expect doubles, pretzels, transfers, afterbang (!), etc...

how about a combo of both? I dunno, urbans are repetitive for me. I couldn't stand will wesson/ahmet dadali's seggy in turbo because it was ALL RAILS. I mean...the total amount of snow that was filmed in that segment was less a ridiculous amount less than what I see in the my first run of the season. Just takeoffs and metal bars and landings.

I love powder and I enjoy park. There's a major difference. And well...Beau, you know me, I'm just a powder fiend...partially because I don't get a lot of access to a park. Park gets me stoked to ride park, and pow trickery gets me stoked to shred some pow.

one you hit urban a few times you will respect it so much more everything ahmet and will do take so much practice and time to get

Don't get me wrong, I respect it. That underslide that wesson did was amazing. ahmet has amazing rail steeze. I'd just rather be on snow and rather watch people sliding on snow rather than on metal. If the day comes where I feel the need to hit urban, it'll be a drop or something where I won't rip apart my skis or have to detune them (counterproductive???)

Backcountry freestyle is where it's at, especially when it's super creative like Eric Pollards self edit.

Watching park kicker hits, I might as well watch aerials. Same concept: man made kicker and lots of spins. I'm not too stoked on watching gymnastics..

love skiing powder but i prefer watching park, obviously there are exceptions such as seeing Seth shred a huge line. i like the idea of park skiing being taken into the powder, though.

Yeah that's true too, since I don't ski much powder, and especially not insanely deep powder, I do feel like powder is simple. All you do is get some wide ass skis and do nice big turns. I mean haha I know I'm wrong but that's kinda what it seems like.

But I do get bored watching the same ole urban for like 20 minutes... Variety is really where its at I think. Watching powder makes me want to ski it and like inspires me to get out the park, but I can't find the kind of powder that's in the movies...

I definitely prefer to watch park later in the season cause there isnt much pow. But I would agree with most people that AK lines get really repetitive and I dont really enjoy watching those but, when it comes to backcountry edits like Pollard Pep Andy and Benchetler shits sick as fuck. I usually like to watch those when theres more powder in the earlier part of the season. On the whole I watch more park segments I would say.

All about relatability, although with today generation attention span, edits seem to be even more appealing sometimes than the actual movies.

watching endless park gets a bit boring after a while... especially all these gangsta edits now where its just people looking like idiots doing endless pretzels...

i love watching guys slay dope pillow lines and whatnot.... but it all gets repetitive. i dont really have a preference as long as whatever im watching is innovative and original.

I like a mixture... and I enjoy certain types of skiing more than others. Candide's edit was epic... as was the stuff from that cold rush day 2. I like the playful usage of the mountain in different ways, with tricks blended in.

But I LOVE watching a massive park jump session go down, or something on a gnarly street rail.

I like all aspects, and I don't think one should have to choose one or the other...

i guess hate was a harsh word. i rather watch park edits than powder. its more of a comparison. and yeah cold rush was absolutely insane

yeah im about the same but too much of one thing gets boringlike when i watched Claim i got super bored of BC since there was minimal park in between

I like atching park better becaause i ski in the east so when i watch pow i always get dissapointed i can never ski it other than on the 1-5 pow days i get. when i watch park i can relate soo much better and actually try some of the stuff they do on rails and jumps. That and I appreciate what they do more because i know first hand how hard it is

I totally agree. I think there should be more park in videos than big moutain or pow cause its seems more for the everyday skier and not the ones who can afford to do all that

I like watching stuff like hunting yeti, where they are playing around in the powder, just backcountry jibbing. For a ski movie, I like a good mix of powder and park, because watching big mountain line after line can get boring, and watching endless spins and rail variations in the park gets just as boring. I think there needs to be some creativity and unique style as well, like Adam Delorme in Turbo, or what Will Wesson/ Andy Parry do.

truthfully, id rather see some urban shit, not just rails but other shit as well. like I hate NY type stuff as well as level 1 urban shit like fence hops and stuff, im a much bigger fan of park movies though

deeeeeeep pow. i love it. i mean park is cool and all... but i can do that myself if i wanted to, although i can't actually (im not that great at park...). But i can't ski pow out here in the east

watching people rip down pillows and beyond waist deep pow just makes my jaw drop everytime. I have gotten a little sick of heli skiing. but like BC skiing in trees and shit with some nice little jibbing thrown in, thats stuffs awsome. i would kill to be able to ski it. its just so fun to watch to, i dont know why, i guess i cant describe it.

ye same,

i watched the massive and skipped through some of the pow segments because it was boring to watch. made me want to go ski pow so badly tho

I'm kinda embarrassed to say this, but i tend to fall asleep when i watch BC cuz its just so repetitive. All the mountains look the same and its just not as entertaining as watching the technical pillow lines, tree skiing, park and urban. This is not say i dont like BC, just it gets a little repetitive to watch.
