Wallisch Project, Teaser 2

needs 40 minutes of talking, man! "it's just..that feeling you get.. when youre like, in the air.. it's amazing. man"

zzzzzzzzzzzz

But who would we know that skiers have to much street cred if they couldn't say fuck the police.

I think we need to discuss this for the next month or so. Talking about talking vs not talking in ski videos. Possibly the most important discussion ever on NS.

Discussion of the century IMHO

Seriously though I think there could be a valid, albeit short, discussion about it. I really like what that this video is going to be 100% skiing and no "filler" but I also enjoy the non skiing parts in other movies.

I like watching the athletes antics when they aren't skiing. Think Voleurz and Chug Life. The random shit they do in between segments makes for a more enjoyable movie.

why wouldnt you want to hear what these two have to say, with that said, i cant wait to see the rawest skiing and filming of the year for less than lunch.

assuming im reading what youre saying correctly...

this isnt some new, recent theme. ski movies have had yawnfest talking in them for 15 years and we've always had varying opinions on whether those are cool or not

Voleurz and Chuglife is different, that shit is funny. But think about WE and how stupid the talking was in that movie, shit was boring as hell.

Totally agree. I think talking can be good in movies, but not if its interview style. I love the candid stuff.

antics are great as long as theyre amusing and not forced (not naming any names here)

interviews are almost always boring and stupid, with a few exceptions

talking about a certain trip or feature is SOMETIMES interesting but very rarely

I was reiterating your sarcasm, and agree about the yawnfest. Also, was pointing out the potential cruel irony of a multi-page thread discussing talking vs. not talking in ski films.

I think there are definitely good ways and bad ways to include commentary in a video. If you have interesting stories and something that will create a unique experience then by all means go for it. The problem arises when you get into telling the same old story without your own personal uniqueness.

In this scenario I think people would like to hear about what Tom put in to this video. To be one of the top competitors in the world, have a spot with one of the most coveted video crews and then to potentially jeopardize all that by saying I want to do my own thing is something that few have ever tried to do before. There are always unique personal scenarios each individual encounters through out the season. Some people just aren't as good as other when it comes to conveying that story through words. Thats where you get the boring same old same old talk.

Maybe I'm wrong but if I find that to be potentially interesting then thats at least one person. There are probably more like me out there.

This isn't a callout to anyone specific. I was just having some fun with sarcasm as the tables got turned with the skier was asking the filmer questions.

I have a feeling that this is going to be the 'edit' that I show to non-skier friends to get them hyped on skiing.

To the first paragraph, I totally agree and I would add that if you're going to spend significant time interviewing someone, adding their narration over footage, etc. they should be inherently "interesting" themselves. Not everyone is charismatic, articulate, or whatever enough to carry it. Plenty of people have really interesting, unique experiences and yet aren't at all good at conveying those things to someone else. Being honest about those sorts of things goes a long way to the finished product.

Basically, even if a certain trip/rail/feature was extraordinary in some way, I don't want to hear someone talk about it if they're a shitty storyteller. Unless of course that's the joke, or something.

I love how blatantly obvious Decker is about. the talking/not talking. He says what we've been too confused for so long to say;

shut the fuck up and show me some bangers.

I would have rather seen an hour long story/movie/doc going over there entire year of adventures, then just a minute of bangers.

Whatever, it will still sell and be successful

For short time periods like the 8 minutes I think The Wallisch project will be, no commentary at all will be perfect. Let it be a sick showcase of both Tom and Kyle's respective talents. Just as how Bob's first dreamland edit was. Or how most skiing edits are, really.

Full length films need commentary though. No doubt about it. It provides backstory and scale for a shot to display the enormity and awesomeness of what just happened. Without it movies are huge edits that honestly, get uninteresting after awhile. You get numb, and commentary fights that.

But what Glen is saying, even commentary alone isn't enough for full length films. Movies should take a theme or story and progress it. Even if its a miniscule one. You should be able to walk away from a movie with something else besides the knowledge that whoever skied in that film can ski really fucking good.

All.I.Can is a good example of this. Yeah it's a cheeseball environmental message. But the movie slowly makes you a wee bit more aware on human's impact on the planet, and the scenes and shoots change with the movie to 'guilt' the viewer with images of hotter and slushier skiing climates, and factories and such. It had an agenda and it pushed it. And you definitely walked away asking youself if you should be making some changes. There was more to it there than just skiing. Valhalla looks spot on from the trailers to be another great example here.

.....but shit, maybe it's all just personal preference. Decide for yourself I guess!?

While I agree that repetitive talking can be quick to bore, I still appreciate a bit of backstory behind some things, I don't wanna hear you tell me how skiing makes you feel free/whatever, but almost a commentary sort of thing is good, especially if you've had a hard expedition climbing somewhere getting the shot for example.

let's nip this in the bud

idk where people got the idea that stept is the only company to ever have commentary in their videos but no, not every mention of ski porn vs talking etc is a shot at stept

I liked the trailer 2 alot, but I actually wish they included more interviews because they are clearly both hilarious guys.

stept has no "real" interviews, if I'm not mistaken. It's just some little chit chats here and there which are fun to watch.

haha. im really digging the philosophy they have about the project. i havent bought a ski film since shanghai six, might have to break that trend.

I disagree. I assume that interview was out before Deckereven saw Mutiny. And for that matter, other films have had dialog and cops etc as well. Level 1's After Dark for example. I don't think he's calling anyone out. They're just talk in shop!

I agree with ski in that Wally and Decker would be highly entertaining if there was some dialog/interview. They could never be boring ha.
