so i bought a vx for cheap a little while ago and it looks amazing, colors are perfect, fisheye is buttery, have plenty of tapes. only problem is that the tapes keep glitching, every 3 seconds or so ill get a glitch in the left side of the screen. I ran a cleaning tape quit a few times and it never resolved the issue. Also tried cleaning it manually with alcohol and that only caused problems. If anyone knows anything about these cameras or thread me to someone who does that could help me out towards resolving the issue that would be great. trying to get some good footy before the season gets going.

write heads wear over time and cleaning tapes wont fix it. usually happens around 1000-2000 hours of recording/rewinding/playback on an sd cam. it can happen faster if you use different brands of tapes from what i hear. im not a professional by any means but as far as i know theres nothing you can do about it. if you have the funds, buy another in as new quality as you can find and DONT use it to rewind tapes. use the one you have now for rewinding/importing to your computer

if i were to use this camera to rewond tapes recorded on a different vx, do you think that it would make the tapes glitch? or do the tapes glitch only when filming with it?

there are two sets of heads that touch the tape, write and read heads. the write heads are always in contact when the cam is on with a tape in it but the read heads are only in contact during playback mode. they should last a lot longer and i would be surprised if you got any glitches from importing

its weird cause when i took a tape from my other camera (sony hvr z1u) that i know doesnt have dirty heads, it comes up glitchy on the vx, could this mean i should give up on this cam conpletely?

The tape heads are definitely messed up, my vx2k does the same thing, usually on an hour tape I get about a half hour of usable footy, there’s nothing you can really do, especially if you have audio dropouts as well, but link some footage, it could be a different problem, old tape cameras are finicky, lots can go wrong, some reparable, some not so much.
