VT Backcountry??

been hearing a lot about the "birthday bowls" at Smugglers Notch VT lately and really want to see them for myself. how do you get there and what are they like??? from what i could find on youtube they look cool and are somewhere on sterling...
 
There is a thread in regionals that had some info on VT backcountry. It was from last year sometime, I cant remember the name. And I think there was one about Sugarloaf. I know its Maine but its somnething.
 
stowe has some 'backcountry' if you hike mansfield, some pretty tough/interesting/fun stuff up top (the chin, hourglass...etc)

between the mtns at sugarbush has some legit ec 'backcountry'

 
You don't need to go to Smuggs to ski BC in VT, but that is a great area for good times, spent a bunch of time in the notch last year scrambling up icy chutes and having a blast, I think there's a few pics in my profile of it.

I'll be up there a shitload this year filming and photoslutting, but honestly if you want to learn about it, there's books on this sort of thing as Smuggs/Stowe is super well known. That or get on TGR and get friendly, there are a bunch of my friends on there that hike and cut all summer long in preparation for winter slayage. In other words, try to find a local who knows their shit, it will save you time effort and a shitload of trial and error as you don't want to spend a night out there like happened to a few friends a couple years ago.

 
This is what I was trying to avoid- giving directions to a perfect place for peope reading it to kill themselves. That is easily one of the most dangerous lines in VT, so thanks for just putting it out there llike it's no big deal.

This is the only real problem I have with sharing BC knowledge with people- you never know if they have the right tools or know how to avoid a slide, and most don't. Going to Eden is about as sketchy and unpredictable as it gets and while I completely understand the stoke and the want to share that awesome time you had- but others will see it, think "Hey, that looked easy and fun as hell" and try it themseves. You think the security guard is going to come dig you out if that face goes? Noooooope. People on here most likely won't have beacons, don't know basic avi info and would be helpless if a friend got buried. I would offer to guide friends in before I'd just throw directions up on newschoolers. Just my .02, no disrespect as that is a great line... Just not one for the unprepared AT ALL.
 
Well somebody had to give the info.

By entering the backcountry, you taking your own risks. Its implied that if you do, you have proper avalanche training and equipment. It would be stupid to go without it, because like you said, it is one if not the most dangerous lines in VT
 
No they really didn't.

IMO, we as semi-educated BC skiers should share the stoke, offer to bring people out, and do your best to convey the dangers of being out there, none of which you did... You just gave exact directions to get there, circumvent security, said it was rad as fuck and pretty much left it at that. Others had to say "wait a second, that's a sand pile with erosion troughs, that's about as dangerous as it gets".

Again, not trying to be a dick but the massive influx of the clueless and stoked into the BC is as dangerous as it is alluring. Just saying in the future, try to be a little more responsible in the BC stoke sharing, it's all I ask. Safety first man, there's no reset button out there and tons of people who will read that have no idea what's up.

Cheers to the coming season tho, and much love for the BC stoke on here.
 
i totally see where you are coming from and am glad you brought up that point. im just a kid with no avy gear and im just looking for some extra trees so ski but i do see the attraction to places like that. after reading all those posts and hearing tons of stories im definitely going to think twice about ducking the rope.
 


They are fun but not much of a secret. There is endless

amounts of "BC" around that range from gnar to mellow meadow

skipping. All can be fun, most require effort.

 
I'm looking for some backcountry buddies to show me the east coast goodies. I've been touring out west for the past four years and this will be my first year living on the east coast since high school. I live down in MA but don't mind driving up north for a weekend or day tour. anyone know of some good spots they're looking to bang out this season? i have avy gear and i'm experienced with it (not sure how big of an issue this is in VT, but i got it!)
