Volkl and salomon ski size

me and my friend both bought just bought skis and we both got 171cm but he got volkl ledge and i got salomon suspects and there is a different of a couple of inches why is that?

some ski companies measure to the tip, and some measure to like halfway up the tip/tail or something like that

tip height makes a big difference as well

Some do the straight tape method where they measure from the top of the tip to the top of the tail, so the tape is actually up off of ski. Others measure the length by along the whole length of the ski top as if the tip/tail were flattened out. Hope that helps.
