Vinyl Collection

Im starting to collect/buy Vinyl, LP's, 7", etc. Just wondering of anybody else here does and if they have tips on shelving and cleaning them? Pics of collections would be cool too. And why do you collect them over CD's? Just curious to see some answers.

I think most people (including me) have a vinyl collection because of the sound. You just can't get that sound anywhere else. After a few too many songs with low bitrate, listening to pure analog recordings is amazing.

Shelve your stuff alphabetically starting NOW. Sorting through lots of records later on SUCKS.

Yeah thats what i've figured, i also made my self a handy little spread sheet on excel to keep track of everything i have. I have it broken down into sizes and then alphabetically. I also keep track of how much i spent on it all so i can see the value of my collection. its addicting haha

anyone got any tips on picking up an older used record player besides going to goodwill? i've been meaning to pick one up for relatively cheap...

I got a record player at the flea market for $35, a brand new unit with a 3-cd changer, dual tape deck and speakers (probably "fell off the truck") and it works perfectly. My collection is still pretty small, but I've found a few gems like an old Exploited record, an early Jimmy Buffett record that is actually pretty good, a first-pressing of Paranoid by Black Sabbath, and a collection of German drinking songs by the Vienna Men's Choir. There's only one place within 30 miles of my house that has a large selection of vinyl, but the owner is really cool and helpful, plus he cuts some really good deals.

btw, definitely keep them in order. It was dumb enough having to organize a collection of 50, so start early and be sure to keep at it.

Vinyl is my favourite way to buy new music. You actually get something for your money: remixes, B sides, artwork, picture disks etc

I buy vinyl because I feel like its a better investment than cd's. They aren't going to scratch and break. Plus its 100% analog sound in its purest form. Except nowadays I guess because its a digital recording anyway. Plus collecting vinyl is cool. Chicks dig it. I've got probably 100 or so (not including a box of terrible 80's vinyl in my garage). Valuble ones include an original pressing London calling, original pressings of every Madness album, a copy of Frankenchrist by Dead Kennedys printed on Alternative Tenticles label, which they aren't allowed to print anymore, and a copy of the Operation Ivy Ramones cover EP that they only made 300 of. My ancient record player's needle is going bust though so I want to finally get some decks and start spinning all my DnB.

i've got about 100 records, maybe 25-30 45's/78's
i have a prettty nice turntable and stuff though, it's all vintage stuff

I collect vinyl although it's been a while since the latest purchase (been doing it since 2002). I own about 50 jazz rarities that you can't find on CD so that alone is a reason to buy vinyl. Main reason for getting into it was to DJ and my collection is now about 600 deep when you factor in everything else (electronic, hip-hop, soul, funk, and rock). A buddy of mine has well over 2000 records in just drum and bass alone.

thats cool but my cousin

he works at a record shop and he collects them
he has
nearly 2000 records of various assortment
and most of them are fairly rare!

My mom got 1,800 records when her uncle died, so happy we sold those (No offence to Vinyl, its pretty legit)

I am a huge fan of Vinyl, my girl bought me this record player that is portable (like 60 bucks or something). It is great also you can rip the music from any record into your computer with this player. I keep my records in a dry area away from direct sunlight. I make sure they are standing up or laying flat because on an angel they will bend and become warped.

If you live in Boston or the greater Boston area, there is a great record store called Looney Tunes. They have thousands of records new and used for cheap.

If you lie them flat it can actually distort the grooves on the bottom ones, or so i hear.

I started collecting a few years ago. I have around 25 LPs. Mainly indie albums and a few floyd and zeppelin albums.

I love records...

I've got all the old Clash albums on vinyl, just as much for the collector aspect as the music (which sounds great of course)...Beatles albums too, of course. I have some badass Deak Kennedys 45's.

Those are just my favorites, I have quite a lot.
