Views on the UK?

I'm British and personally I think this place is a shit hole.

I recognise the US has its fair share of issues, which we don't need to go into, but I'd still emigrate in a heartbeat if I could - not just for the skiing, which is obviously a massive factor - but also for the views, the weather, the cars, the roadtrips, the women, the mountain biking, New York, Hollywood, the ice hockey.... and just the general sense of freedom that you can't find here in the UK which is massively overpopulated.

This single photo alone from my roadtrip in April 2019 makes me dream of emigrating one day. Sadly though it's extremely difficult to orchestrate a permanent move to the US.

I really fucking hate living here, but they say the grass is always greener on the otherside... I know 9/10 members on here are American, what's your views on the UK?

UK is definitely more densely populated than the states, so I agree with you that it might feel overpopulated.

Here are three things that I think make the states really unique that many of us often overlook:

1. Most populated rich-world country. We have far more large cities, many with their own culture, than any other country in the world. Cities like New York, LA, and Houston are melting pots of various cultures from every corner of the world. UK has this in London as well though.

2. Geography. The US has to be one of the most geographically diverse countries in the world.

3. Tying in with number two - Public lands. We are so fortunate to have the amount of public land that we do.

That said, we have a lot of drawbacks as well. Pricey healthcare, gun crime, homelessness, political polarization (I know this isn’t unique to us), etc.

One of the coolest parts about the UK and Europe as a whole is how accessible international travel is. For under $100 you can fly roundtrip to almost anywhere in Europe on a budget airline. In the states international travel is pricey and time-consuming.

Its cool how easy it is to get around the UK.

Found it a lot harder to live a healthy lifestyle though.

I have British citizenship but I hate the fucking accentS. I mean plural too how everyone judges everyone by their accents and how they talk its ridiculous and there is no way that is these peoples natural way of speaking its like they want to show off where they are from every time they talk.

I've met a couple of "british" kids over here in the us. They were very proud of it and you could tell there accent was fake, because it was only used sometimes. So my experiences with the Brits isn't great, but that was just a couple of stuck up kids.

My knowledge of the uk comes from Bond movies, Austin powers movies and top gear, are those accurate portrayals?

Yeah, mood. I wouldn't want to live in the United "Kingdom" either.

No good skiing

No good skate spots

No good food

No good weed

I shudder at the thought tbh.

Love these guys though:

I lived in London for two years and one thing I noticed was that ppl fart all the time! Maybe it’s a cultural thing or whatever, but ya you will be sitting or standing rather on the tube and the person next to you will casually be ripping the nastiest most vile smelling farts in the world and think nothing of it. I dunno I never understood it.

Got a skilled trade? Welcome to Canada!

Applying for Canadian residency in a year or two, just building up some skilled-trade experience to give me the best chance. lived out there for a couple of years on a working holiday visa and had the best time of my life.

Hahaha amazing observation.

Not sure how easy it would be to relocate but New Zealand would be another good country to live in if your looking to get out of UK asap.

I was glad I was living in Ireland to watch Brexit go down. What a shit show. The UK seems cool for like a week or two but I like my public lands too much toe want to leave the US for the UK

Ireland and Scotland sound cool, otherwise I have very little desire to visit England or other parts of the UK. Like you said, to dense.

Would like to bounce around Scotland and Ireland for a month or two, think that would be really cool. Have no interest in going to England tbh.

My hot take on the uk? You guys are fucked. Crime is rampart, overpopulation due to mass immigration, the loss of all ur colonies really fucked you guys good.

the country side is pretty tho.

Also take a look at the wages in the UK… they r a fucking joke. I did grad school at one of the best universities in the UK and salaries in London were from like 22-35k pounds a year range. And apparently 40k pounds a year in London is considered good. Income inequality in the UK is crazy. At least in the USA a kid can go to a shit college for undergrad and still get a starting salary at 50k usd

Yeah in general the US has pretty high wages. I'd be making about half my salary in most of the developed world

Yet people still bitch about it. If you actually put in the work, anyone can make at least 50-70k easy. I despise people like Robert reich. Companies should want to raise wages to show whether or not it’s a good place to work at. Not the government and our wages are so high compared to a lot of places. Most don’t even pay the federal minimum anymore in recent years.

Reich is a joke. He's like a pastor that just tells people whatever they want to hear but for economics.

Haha if macro economics were unsustainable. He just tells people, yeah wages should be 25 an hour. Done. Without the fact that prices across the board would rise to match the wage not changing affordability too much and minimum wage is not a wage for life. It’s a starting wage to help you work up the payscale. High minimums are a detriment to the consumer.

Pretty much yeah. Bashes on big corporations while advocating for policy that only large corporations can afford to operate under.

Take out NY and Hollywood and then you have a point. The wooden teeth race of Britain are American's greatest enemy.

My generation

The us is great if you don’t pay attention to the media or people on the internet but if your only expirence is how people act online can’t imagine wanting to come here

The only British person I've spent any real time getting to know would not stfu about making fun of me for being American.

Every fucking day Charles had some shit to say about how the world hates us fat Americans and our mcdonalds hamburgers. That guy must've said "hamburgers" to me over 1000 times.

It was like, dude, we're living on a petroleum engineering government compound in buttfuck rural China... the only Anglos for 100 miles in any direction! We've been eating lunch together in the cafeteria every day, the same stale duck assholes and rice, for the past 6 months. Everyone complains about the food, but nobody more than you!

Shit, thinking back on it, I must've been one of his only friends because the Chinese community hated him for being black, and the African students hated him for not being black enough. And well, everyone hated me for being American (and especially for being a woman in a men's industry) so we needed to stick together!

He ended up dropping the program and peacing out back to the UK, never to be heard from again.

I hope he's doing okay (well I'm certain he is because he loaaaathed living in China), but man, that guy would not give the hamburger thing a rest.

Everyone's got their own vivid internal lives and self-dialogue (and to be fair we were under a lot of unusual pressures), so idk if I can base my view of a whole ass country on that one guy.

Still, I'd consider him a friend... so in that case... the UK is fine by me ? .

I had a lot more fun in the UK than I expected. Also, I worked with and was around UK people 99% of the time when I was in Queenstown, NZ. UK is cool but goddamn y’all can be trashy when you drink

It’s a stereotype that brits generally have of Americans, which everyday becomes more out of touch as obesity continues to spiral out of control in our own country.

Yes when it comes to drinking we’ve never had a particularly classy image. What were you doing over here?

Top Gear definitely. Ambitious, yes. Rubbish, Yes.

That’s because there’s so little countryside left. In a few years every inch of this country will be full of new-build identical mass-produced housing estates. Over population is a real issue but our government don’t seem to give one fuck about it.

Sure, but that's not an apples to apples comparison.

That salary pretty much anywhere in the developed world will be almost discretionary since healthcare, retirement, unemployment, education, etc. is already all taken care of by the government. Whereas here in the US you have to spend a big chunk of your income towards your own healthcare, retirement, kids' education, etc.

And those expenses in the US go way up as you advance through life, so basically early on you definitely make more in the US even after factoring in all of those things because healthcare is cheaper when young, no kids, etc. But as you get older it certainly shifts as life becomes way more expensive in the US than anywhere else in the developed world.

I'd say very high earners are probably still better off in the US over the course of their lifetime, but for anyone else, not sure, I guess it would depend on the specifics of one's situation.

All the historical stuff in the UK is super interesting from neolithic through roman and onward. The countryside is neat, and the ancient walking path network is great. Public transit is amazing and the art scene is vibrant.

One thing I find unsettling is the lack of wilderness. Every square inch of land has been manipulated by humans at some point in history.
