View thread after it's been deleted?

One of my biggest pet peeves is replying/writing in a thread, leaving for a few hours, then coming back to find out it's been deleted and not being able to see why :(

Would it be possible that if you were part of the thread (aka it is part of 'My Threads') that you would still be able to view the thread, yet no longer be able to reply to it? That way it is still no longer active, but you would be able to read the replies that you otherwise would not have seen because it was deleted before you got back to it.

I understand if it was just a spammy thread there is no use seeing it, but some threads are 3+ pages and then they are just wiped out and I have no reason why. (ie skiierman meme thread, bummer to see that one go...)

just an idea, NS! thoughts/comments?

The thing is that most threads are deleted for a reason, like in the case of the skierman one direct hate on a member of NS. Some are deleted because of racism or just overall shitshow and if you were still able to view this it would totally defeat the purpose of the thread being deleted in the first place.

i really would just like a message to the creator of a thread about why it was deleted. much like a ban message. Its hard to learn a lesson from a thread deletion if you don't even know what you did wrong...
and just the same if the people posting in the thread get out of hand, the message should still be sent to the creator.

Instead of being deleted the thread should be locked. Meaning you can view it but not post in it anymore. Almost every other forum does it, why not NS?

This, I had a thread deleted by ashley once and she messaged me telling me that it was deleted and why. It was nice of her.

our deleted threads tend to go downhill very fast, which makes them unsuitable to be locked. It seems that usually they get deleted, it's because something inappropriate was posted and needed to be done away with completely.

We have better things to do than to be deleting threads, but as said - most of the time they get deleted because there is an obviously valid reason

And has been said many many times, if you ask the mod who deleted it why, and it's not plain and obvious then you will likely get an answer

If you make a thread titled 'FUCK YOU' then done ask why it gets deleted.

Exactly. Locking threads and deleting what is useless are two different things. No reason to save what we delete. Minus a few like "post before a green name"...first coupla pages were hilarious, that seriously went downhill. I see both sides.

But in regards to knowing...if you had a thread that was deleted, ask a mod, we'll see who deleted and you can NICELY ask them why. We're certainly not going to message every member that we delete a thread on and tell them why.

I think an option between locking and deleting may be a good addition. I've suggested it before as it is used on many other forums.

The idea behind locking is that the material is STARTING to get out of hand, but there is a lot of useful material earlier on that should remain viewable and searchable.

We however did away with Thread Deletion notification simply because it was becoming tedious for us to be responding to messages of people asking why their threads were deleted, when it was completely obvious that they should not have posted what they did. (Not even to mention how many people would send PMs saying nothing more than "why?" which is unreasonable considering how much trash we need to delete on a daily basis.

First of all, the point of deleting a thread is that it is removed from the forums and can no longer be accessed. What you are suggesting defeats the purpose.

Second, I would be all for a "lock" function but this is not Vbulletin and every change made needs to be coded by a dude at the NS office. There is a discussion right now in the mod forum about ways to improve the site, with the caveat being "no new programming" because the stuff that is already lined up to be coded is going to take months.
