I just purchased a panasonic gh3. Once I receive the camera I plan on going to my local camera store and trying out a few different lenses to see which ones I like. I want to learn more about video editing. I just don't know where to start. There is so much info out there. Which program to use, different techniques, tutorials, ect. I feel overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. Any help is much appreciated.

Why would you get a gh3 without even knowing what glass you're going to get for it... I use premiere/ae cs6 and it was easy to learn and figure out. There's lots of tutorials on youtube also, if you really cant get it....

haha no idea why you would purchase a camera without first going and playing with your options for glass...but as to the editing part Final Cut Pro X is super easy to use, FCP 7 has more features but steaper learning curve, and as to other programs like Premier I really have no experience.

To start, what operating system do you have? This may determine whether you use FCP7 or something like Adobe Premiere. I personally use Adobe Premiere CS5, others use CS6, aside from some basic features I doubt you would notice a difference. These programs tend to be a bit pricy and most of us on NS torrent them simply because were not profiting off our works (We make edits, not movies). Regardless, Adobe makes it very easy to import clips to the program and onto the timeline in their natural .mts file type. For this reason I use it, and I have a PC so FCP isn't an option. That's basic framework to get you started, post back in here with any questions you might have about what I said, I'm glad to help.

Thanks. Well, I have never owned a Mac, only PC. I want to build a new computer for editing. You hit the nail on the head. The complete non student package for cs6 is EXPENSIVE, like $1700 expensive. I am weary of using torrents for adobe products, for fear of being sued, downloading programs that will never work properly, or have viruses.
What about color correction and grading? Can that be done in cs5 or 6? Or do I need a separate program for that. I want to learn more about after effects, video editing in general, and movie making.

Adobe products are typically extremely safe and easy to torrent. You download the Adobe trial directly from their website, the only thing you're truly torrenting is a patch and keygen program (both VERY easy).
You most likely won't be doing any grading until you really have the basics down, but that can be done using Red Giant's Magic Bullet Looks, which can also be torrented easily (seeing a trend here). Color correction can be down in Premiere, the program isn't quite as developed as the FCP7 equivalent, but it gets the job done.
While Premiere is extremely in-depth, it's amazingly simply if you're patient and take the right steps to learn it.
