Vehicle for mountain life?

Get an Astrovan or Safari. 20+ mpg, AWD, tons of storage, and cheap parts. They stopped making them in 2005 or so, so you might have to look for a while to find one with low miles.

More important than timing belt (just make sure it has been changed if it has over 100k), check for head gasket issues and rear subframe rot if you're going for an older Subaru. The 2.2L engine in the older impreza sports are more reliable, but, again, they're hard to find with low mileage.

I don't understand the whole "my family has died in yotas therefor no yotas" mentality. Why are they so sure you will die in a yota and not a subaru?

If it was the zombie apocalypse, my options for making it across any considerable distance to the safe zone were: walking or a late 90's to 00's Ford Ranger...

I would walk.

I have a Volvo xc70 with 155k miles on the clock but these things are bomb proof and will keep going just like a Subaru..=

If you can't get a Toyota you should get a VW Touareg TDI. One of the only diesel AWD options available in the US that isn't crazy money. You can get one that's like ten years old for 10 to 15k.

i had a 2000 outback and it was good, but last year i got a 2002 impreza hatch and i love it waaaaayyy more. enough room to sleep in, cram it full of gear, better on gas than the outback, super solid on icy canadian roadways and peppier than the outback (the outback really was sluggish). also i got mine with 190,000KM for $1,500CAD at an auction and put about $1k worth of work into it and she runs beautifully. go with a subie or toyota

Touregs don't have great mpg tho.. you can find a subie for cheaper and better mpg that's also awd
