Vancouver 2010 opening ceremonies *Discussion*

nothing compared to beijings
and then a horrible fail with the cauldron lightingu could see wayne gretzky wondering wtf is gion on

EVERYONE IN CANADA IS NATIVE. THE OLYMPIC CEREMONIES CONFIRMED IT. Fuck all this native shit, I live in Vancouver, you know how many natives are in my city? Maybe 10 000. Which is about 1 percent of the population.

I don't know why people are trying to compare it to Beijings, they spent endless amounts of money of theres, and it's all they honestly cared about. I was happy with ours, although they should have focused a bit more on canada's culture that isn't native, along with having a few more relevant artists play, like where is RUSH?

sorry Canada didn't have over a billion dollars to spend on the ceremonies...

and wayne was cool as shit, Steve Nash was the one giving the camera the sideways "WTF" looks

Shit. Somehow I missed the whole thing, and I'm from Vancouver. Fuck fuck fuck. I was busy eating chicken fingers and doing my fucking astronomy homework. Is it going to be posted somewhere?

yep. and apparently we're all aboriginal, not that the actual statistic of 4% of Canadians have some sort of aboriginal ancestry means anything

i had to refrain myself from seeing what the mishap with the inner torch considering im a west coast peon, but despite the tech. difficulty, that was pretty fuckin sweet.

i balled every time the georgians were mentioned. it was pretty cool over all, especially being from the area and all.

Rush was supposed to play but they cut it out because rock was too unfitting after the luger died......so I sat and watched indian dances for 3 hours,.......coooool

I love how we put the native americans front and center and actually pretended to care about their culture for a few hours. After that ceremony was over we'll just continue to shit all over them and slowly squeeze them out of our culture.
I'm all for the native american mindset but I really really hate it when we actually pretend to give a shit about them.

I'm not from Canadia, but those were exactly my thoughts.

Also, there is no way those were all "natives" - I bet most of them were hired actors, so in a way it seemed to me that they were almost mocking or patronizing them.

I imagine that there were some actors mixed in there for sure.
Also one thing that also pissed me off was the presence of the 2 or 3 native leaders that sat near Harper and the governer general. To me that was a misleading attempt to show the world that native leaders actually play a part in the day to day parliamentary activities. Canadians know that they don't but the international viewers didn't.
Aside from that I really enjoyed the opening ceremonies aside from that opera singer that was belting out an ear piercing tune while the flag was being raised; made me cringe.

Was ok Projections and fiddlers was great

Best partt was when Canada was coming in, anyone notice they were playing The song, Im a joker, Im a smoker Im a midnight toker, I lollllld

the ending really sucked pick up truck ride in the rain, wtf

someone ban this 12 year old who is a first time weed smoker.

BTW those aboriginal leaders sitting next to harper and michaelle jean was complete bullshit. They are trying to make it seem as if first nations were important to the government but in real they don't give a shit about them.

Fuck that fat guy toni mitchell, KD lang, wayne gretzky open truck shit and the opera singer. They make me ashamed to be canadian.

Absolute cheezy corny bullshit. Celine Dion, Rush, circque du soleil should have been there.

well what were the supposed to do? we are known for having mounties and such. i think it was fine and entertaining. that one guy flying through air was stupid though

-laughing at how they made the natives dance the whole time

-killer whale projection was the only thing i liked

-perpetuating canadian stereotypes even further

-the drawn out canadian anthem annoyed me

-fiddle playing and that kid flying through the air made me go get another rum and coke so that i didn't start breaking stuff

-i would tax nelly furtado for days

-whatever team it was before pakistan had the hottest girl there

-ctv did a good job at zooming in on all the hot girls

-commentating on ctv was redundant and at times rhetorical

fuck you I'm in college and sorry that when I'm high I don't turn into a cynical nihilistic douchebag who thinks that everything is beneath him

Fiddling bit was sick. The funniest part about those Native "Leaders" being there was the fact that they showed up late. They didn't even see the opening dances done by their "people." Probably getting shitfaced at the bar across the street.

the skiers and boarders in all red on the wires were the most unsteezy and horrible misrepresentation of us. the graphics were cool, but the part with that kid in the field was random as fuck. everything else was pretty meh, but the torch fail was straight up hilarious.

I literally felt like crying when they played the remixed national anthem though. such a disgrace. it wasnt even possible to sing with it, it was even hard for me to recognize at first.

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Homeless people living within 2010 Olympic security zones will be removed by police during the Games in Vancouver.

But deputy police chief Steve Sweeney said Thursday the homeless will be offered space in shelters or given help to go wherever they want, and only arrested if they refuse to move. Sweeney's comments came at a packed community forum on Olympic security held in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Gastown is funny/sketchy as fuck. Some guy tried to stab me with his fucking needle down there one time after a concert.

As for the opening ceremonies, they were pretty much bullshit. It's a common fact (that nobody likes admitting) that in BC, nobody really gives a fuck about Native culture. In school, I'm going to say that about 25-40% of our Social Studies curriculum is based on Native history/lifestyle/how white people are horrible, and yet nobody really gives a fuck. Just thought I'd like to get that off my chest.

i have to walk back and forth between my ski hill and home, should i keep my boots buckled up or really loose or whatevers comfy?

I know they were on a budget for this, but some of the opening ceremony was fucking weak. Chevy truck (with a burnt headlight) in the rain for the torch? No thanks. The log that never came up was jokes. And they could have decorated the outside of BC Place considering all the aerial shots.
The Native aspects were massively gay. We all know no one gives a fuck about that stuff.
Where was Cirque Du Soleil? Where was Rush? Where was the giant game of shinny (hockey)?
They kind of relied too heavily on projections. The whales were dope but a lot of that stuff could/should have been omitted. Like the dancing in the trees and fields, gay.
The singing was absolutely disgraceful. Just horrible. I was at a pub so I could barely hear the national anthem but the way they butchered it was disgusting. The opera singer was stupid. Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado weren't singing and their song was way too cliche. KD Lang and Sara Mclaughlin were good though.
The music seemed alright. I liked the fiddlers (better than all the gay dancing shit) but that poet seemed hella lame.
All in all it was not bad. Some stuff was great and but some was just terribad. Canada had hands down the best uniforms walking in. I also noticed those two Norwegian girls, so hawwwt.
