Valemount Glacier Resort gets environmental approval

Same dude that's been trying to get jumbo happening. Unlike Jumbo, this project actually makes sense. I've personally been wanting a mega resort up in that area for a while. Check the master plan, the thing is going to be huge! Over 2000M vert, topping out around 3000M. Glaciers for summer skiing, trees, mellow terrain for the family and enough steeps to impress anyone.

It could be pretty sweet but Valemount is still a really long drive from the nearest decently sized airport or city. I don't really see how it will be feasible.

Hope it happens. I like the idea. I'm glad people are investing in new ski areas. Shows its not a dying sport after all maybe.

This is also a project is love to be a part of. But I'm not from the Canada.

this will flop. it's not near or on the way to anything. overambitious project for the middle of fucking nowhere. I foresee a rapid expansion, low visits, then running out of money.

revelstoke and kicking horse are super sick, but usually dead and they're even not off the beaten path. if you're more than a few hours from a commercial airport nobody will come. the backbone of our industry are the gorbies and first timers, and those people won't drive 5 or 6 hours to spend money.

that being said it looks like a sweet place to shred. definitely gonna check it out.

dub post but I heard today that there are ~30 resorts being developed in china right now by a design company out of whistler (mathews or something?). pretty shocking but I guess since they've got the 2022 games they're pretty hyped on skiing.

There is two resort development companies based in Whistler, Ecosign and BHA. Both are helping design ski resorts in China. Resort planning is super cool and interesting job.

But yeah, Valemount Resort looks super interesting. I'll be looking into working for them when they start to hire. To work on a resort from the very beginning would be a dream come true.

Seceret Garden is the name of China man Olympic site ski area. Only know of one player in the project so don't know many details. I think they have a snow issues there as well. Seems be a growing trend. Build ski area where it is not cold. Genius.

2.5 hours from Prince George (which apparently has the 2nd longest runway in Canada - who knew?) with no mountain passes to deal with. Not too far past Jasper either, and I don't know if they get help from the government or not, but Marmot Basin has managed to stay afloat all these years.

It is far away from a major urban centre, but if they pull off their master plan, people will go. They better have the money in the bank to be prepared for a rough first couple years though I would think.

that face you make when you distract everyone with trying to get Jumbo Resort approved and meanwhile slip Valemount through...Oberto is a sneaky bastard

didn't know it was so close to prince george. it looked far on a map. I still don't think it will take off though, but it will be cool if it does.

Yeah I can verify this, I live in Jasper myself and Marmot Basin has mostly survived because of all neighboring towns and cities drive up for the weekend (Hinton, Edson and even people from Edmonton)

I mean Valemount's only like a 1.5 hour drive from Jasper and I can totally see myself and neighboring towns driving up for the weekend (especially in the summer).

I am very excite.

supposed to have the first lifts open by december 2017.. I know where I'll be next time I spend a winter in BC. The first few years will be empty with fantastic slackcountry I bet.

The resort vertical dick measuring contest is getting so beat.

And, as Vail buys Whistler and Whistler talks about getting more secure in the face of climate change, I seriously wonder what we need more mega-resorts for.
