Vail Resorts ruining east coast park skiing

Long story short: Vail has cut the size of Sunapee's park in half this year. In the past Sunapee has always had two side by side trails but this year they groomed one flat for either beginner terrain or I hate to say it, a slalom course for the race team. Can we get a chain of people to spam the mountains Instagram (mountsunapee) NOT the terrain parks Instagram because it is run by park crew and you will just be complaint to the people who are complaining to the higher ups with some sort of grief over this or the fact that the park has still not open yet (January 29). A lot of the local kids have been doing this on the past posts but if we can get big numbers maybe management will take a different stance.

Lets see what the ns threads can still do to help out the freestyle community its been years since I've made a thread

First thing that thread says is true to Sunapee our long time park manager quit but the local kids causing a fuss on the Instagram has sparked long time local adults siding with them saying it ridiculous they have seen us hiking two features for over a month now while paying for a pass that they don't use

I heard hunter mtn got scammed also they don’t even have a park kids have been digging stuff in on their own from what I’ve seen. I saw something last year about vail getting ride of okemos super pipe and their park got smaller as well. Even carinthia doesn’t look as big as normal. Big boulders completely shrunk park wise now that pat Morgan left. No superpipe at breck or big big jumps. What I’ve seen of keystone they don’t have big jumps that coulda changed since what I saw last, and pc aren’t as big as they were a few years ago. You could argue all this is a lack of snow and cold temps and the good ole covid of the 19, but you could also say vail is trying to phase out parks. I personally think it’s a bit of both.

Cutting back everywhere for sure but before vail bought Sunapee we would have a park by Christmas every year now it’s a full month after and they got rid of half and at least we can make them feel the heat by blowing up their social media

Are you sure they're done building/blowing. Sunapee has opened one trail and left the other one flat tons of times and then come back and finished it up a few weeks later... I would be surprised if they started fucking with the park this year considering they blew more snow in that park last year than ever before... there was snow in there til june...

That being said Vail has fucked sunapee since they bought out the Muellers. They take months longer to open the mountain up than before and their grooming has gone to shit.

It would be a shame if they shit canned the park

I work park crew and that’s exactly what’s happening

Damn, I was hoping things would get better with the new manager. Last two were bitchy Vail robots. Did they give you guys a reason as to why you couldn't do things the way they have been done the last 20years?

Were doing our best with what we have still going to be mad fun and we got some new features just hoping some pressure put in the public eye will make rethink things next year

I wouldnt be surprised if vail bought all these east coast resoets just to ruin them and make people go west.

That park has long suffered from not having any branding or promotion. Sunapee consistently has some of the best setups in the east and yet only like 25 people regularly ride it. Now that every little kid that has a pass to carinthia has a sunapee pass, thanks to vail, you guys shouldn't have any problem keeping that place busy. Just need to get the attention that the park there deserves but has never gotten.

It’s disappointing what vail resorts is doing not just out east but out west as well. Can’t speak for everyone but the amount of park prowess overall has gone down exponentially at keystone, Breck, vail. It’s not bad don’t get me wrong but vail resorts is focused on the “tourism” aspect of their mountains heavily versus park. I’m a park guy I love it but the parks have gone down drastically over the last 3-5 years. Powdr still seems to be nailing it at winter park and copper. Not trying to bad mouth vail however saw a “fuck vail” sticker the other day and it made me crack up.

Sunapee and cb were the unwanted stipulations to the Okemo purchase, I wouldnt expect anything positive from daddy vail at either of those places.

I feel this, and I feel sorry.

Vail has done the same thing to the Canyons side of Park City Mountain Resort. The park was AMAZING before Vail. Then Vail has made it smaller. And now this year they didn't even open Transitions (park) because of "personnel shortage". That entire huge potion of the resort has nothing. Just features rusting away.

Funny enough, PCMR has had a CRAZY amount of traffic and tourism this year. Cutting the buck where it hits us first...typical giant corporation behavior.

I mean you're just delusional if you think anyone (including vail) cares about park skiing. Just be happy they still build a huge park on the PC side. Also, transitions will be back next year when they have more budget and no global pandemic to deal with.

I would argue that powdr cares quite a bit or at least sees potential in terrain parks and that customer base to make some coin.

I mean woodward prints money, so thats fair. I just dont understand where people get that park skiing is this huge significant thing, its a niche within a niche.

Dude, it's free.

You can't be dumb enough to think there's no alternative to Vail.

Park citys park is still better, but i dont really ski park anymore, i like to hit a rail now and then but thats about it, so its not really in consideration for me. Plenty of people i know ski woodward now, plenty of people quit skiing pc awhile ago too.

Delusional? Ok buddy.

Keep on boot licking there fella.

As much as it sucks its pretty fucking true. Parks are in no way profitable so vail shareholders mandate that they cut down on them.

It's not about the corporate reality that you boot lickers are spewing...it's about the loss of culture. We all KNOW why it's happening. Doesn't mean we can't be pissed and can't fight back. In the end the consumers hold the most power. Not some cynical apologists.

You can be pissed, i'd be too but average vail costumer makes 170k a year, vail doesnt care about pissing us off because we are a smaller consumer group that they barely make money off anyway.

You'd be surprised what power an online negative PR campaign against Vail has and the changes they'll make if people are loud enough.

I dont think that is enough but hopefully vail will have better earnings than expected this year and spend more on parks next season.

In this thread: people blaming vail for cutting costs while covid regulations continue to gut the industry. Why are people suprised?

Have you been to Park City this year? It's nuts. There isn't a shortage of business.

Liftlines and full lots =/= business. Ski areas make their money selling $15 burgers and $9 macrobrews, not by selling season passes to bums pounding pbr's and pb&j's

This exactly...which brings us back to the point of this thread, instead of commenting here and fighting with each other go drop a comment on mountsunapee Instagram and let’s see if enough voices in public view can make a difference

This thread is literally about east coast parks though. Obviously we're talking about park city and other places now too but parks can be lretty profitable for small mtns. The same with night skiing. Not every mtn has night skiing or a sick park, but the right mtns in the tight spots kill it.

Some mtns that have sick parks have hoards of park kids there all the time. Obviously there's the argument about park kids not spending money and families being the target, but tickets and passes are still tickets and passes and those kids do buy some food.

You can't increase the vert of your mountain but a sick park can be built on a 200' hill. Some small east coast or midwest spot might not have any steeps, good trees, no cliffs or chutes, but they could build a killer park and compete with some of the best mtns in the country. It's really one of the biggest opportunities to level the playing field.

It takes a while to build a thriving park program though. That's also what sucks about what Vail is doing to boulder. That was the spot, now it's not. Bobby katz and fam strikes again.

Wut? There really wasn't any of this in this thread. Actually surprising considering some of the last few threads on the topic.

If you guys are so upset about vail parks get together and protest in person, hold hands and close off a lift, slope, ticket booth or access road, just don’t wreck shit and don’t hinder and medical vehicles etc in any way, close access to a park and build your own, take secret shits in inconvenient places and leave a note as to y it’s there idk have fun with it

Ah yes, invoking Martin Luther King Jr's famous speech... "I have a dream that one day we can take secret shits in inconvenient places. I don't know, have fun with it!"

Guess he beat me to it.

On the downside however... what if these shits become a thing and are referred to as “ savage biffs “? I’d have to change my name?, or maybe I’d own that shit, literally

Ever since Stowe was bought by Epic the main park on tyro has been gone. That was the only big park on the mountain now we just have a medium one and a tiny rail garden.

That’s actually false. The largest revenue stream comes from pass sales/tickets.

I wonder what the revenue split is- between day pass sales, conglomerate pass days, and season pass days. Anyways, I've noticed this year there's lines and full lots but the mountain seems dead. I just chalked it up to more singles skiing with season passes instead of groups and families skiing on day passes or conglomerate equivalent.

All conjecture tho, all I know is the ski area makes a fuckload less money off me (or the usual NS demographic) than the average visiter per ski day probably
