US OPEN????

Rumor I heard was if no title sponsor signed up by Christmas it was dead. As of about 10 days ago, there was no title sponsor. I'm curious, with three Dew Tour stops, the Gatorade Free Flow Tour and the XGames, do people really care any more? In my opinion, It seems like the USOF was lacking relevance in recent years.
 
There is not going to be a US open this season sadly, and from what i hear no nippon open, and dumont cup is still iffy.
 
It's too bad that something so sick, that ANYONE had a chance to enter is being overtaken by a publicity stunt for Mtn. Dew.

In my opinion the USO (maybe not the last year or two) will forever be ten times better than the Dew Tour could ever dream to be. An open format is where it's at. Fuck the drama of a series and giving only the top 40ish riders a chance. Especially with the insanely deep talent pool out there at this point. Some random kid who slays should be able to enter, make it through some qualifiers, and show the industry what's up.

I understand why the Dew tour has prevailed ($$$$). I'm just sayin.... USO rocked back in the day. And an open format needs to be brought back to give some youngins the chance to show up some pros. Remember when it was Spong (age 14-15ish?) vs. Schiller in the big air final? Maybe not, but it was pretty badass. Nobody knew who the fuck Derek Spong was at that point. Or at least the majority of people didn't, I sure as fuck had never heard the name until then.

It sucks so hard to see that event completely gone. Someone bring it back please. Dew, X, and Freeflow (really?) don't have shit on what the USO was all about initially. In my opinion.

I would rather see a grassroots, core open ski event, but my suspicion is that Dew, X, and Free Flow has sucked all the oxygen out of the room. With four major televised events, how can a smaller, less well-funded generate the buzz it needs to be successful? More importantly, I feel Dew has inflated the necessary prize money needed to attract a quality field. With so much cash available elsewhere and a busy schedule, why should Dumont or Wallisch bother showing up? If the top athletes didn't show, would Spong v. Schiller have been as amazing? I don't think so.

I think it's a sad day, but it's a sign of the progress of the sport--like it or not.

theres definitely some good and bad sides to pepsi kind of taking over. for one, they are putting a lot more money into the sport helping give athletes more pay. on the down side, its turning really mainstream and events are shaped more and more to please to non skier people who love EXTREME sports.
 
Sad yes. I agree. But, the Dew shows progress? How so? By letting the same 20-40 kids in every stop, without giving many other up and comers a chance? There are a lot of new kids even this year that are slaying it and won't get a chance to be in the Dew Tour just because they aren't (insert flavor of the week Dew Tour pro name here).

At least it's fun to watch when I'm drunk at 2am. Go Dew Tour... So much exposure at 2am on USA...

Live coverage last year was WAY more legit. Doesn't that show that somehow the event has regressed in only it's second season? Even if the skiing is has improved? Maybe they need some mega-mo or built-for-Dumont events, that shit works for ESPN to get primetime coverage and tons of sponsor $$$.

But hey, that's my opinion. I like Coke a lot more than Pepsi too, so

maybe that's why I'm not feeling the Dew Tour as much? idk if that

even makes sense.

But this event was the most legit shit I've ever been to and witnessed in person. And anyone there would agree that there was some serious progression going on. And this was only 3 years ago. An open event of this caliber now would be insane with the amount of talent in the ski world now.

 
TJ's switch 1440 in 06 was the trick that got me into freeskiing, and its still better than any dub cork. Best trick ever landed on skis.
 
he didn't grab the last like 720... granted it's still amazing, but best trick ever landed on skis??? there have been much sicker switch 14s since then, so even if thats your favorite trick... its still kinda silly to call that the best one ever. just my thoughts. absolutely no hate, i think schiller is the man.
 
i dont mean technicality, sure more techy tricks have been done. But its was super progressive and it got me into freeskiing so i like it. Anyway the point of what i am trying to say is: the us open was sick and its a shame its not going this year
 
well, the US Open was the only comp that was OPEN. all the comps you listed are very exclusive invite comps and are ridiculously difficult to get into. The Aspen Open is pretty much the only comp left that is actually an "open." So no it does not lack relevance and I really really really miss the US Open slopestyle

plus the freeflow tour is bullshit..age restrictions...real cool.
