US Hypersonic Glider-13,000 mph.

Shits crazy. Says the US Military is planning on it reaching speeds up to mach 20 so it can get to crisis all over the world in a matter of seconds/minutes.

possibly the future of commercial travel?

imagine that, no longer having to take like 15 hour flights over seas

i feel like if it hits the water at 13,000 mph itll obliterate. that being said i feel like they will slow it down

why? once a steady speed is reached, how would the person even know they were moving?

Its the acceleration that puts a limit on what the human body can take.

It probably only mover at 13k because the atmosphere is thin as hell at the edge of space. Thin atmosphere=no drag, so it can maintain speed pretty well after being deployed from the rocket. Once it gets lower where the atmosphere is dense, it'll slow down enough so that parachutes can be used to stop it from being destroyed when it lands. I think.

yeah well its basically in space, anything over around mach 4 to 5 will melt the metal on any airplane moving near sea level. At high altitude the air is thin though, and at higher altitude, the air isnt even fucking there, because ur in space, so you can go as fast as u want. calling this thing a glider is a little misleading

Jets have been flying at the edge of space since the 60's and probably before and never moved at those speeds.
My dads an aircraft engineer i'll have to ask him about this.

How fast does a Space Shuttle travel

Like any other object in low Earth orbit, a Shuttle must reach speeds of about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour) to remain in orbit

its not thatttt fast

like mentioned before, the thing is probably flying somewhere in the edge of space....

and to the person who was wondering why airplanes that fly that high don't go as fast; jets use turbines, not rocket engines, turbines rely on surrounding air to work, so denser air will give much more "power" while those extremely high regions won't give the engines enough power ...

rockets on the other hand have rocket propulsion that basically functions on the principle of 'conservation of momentum' and will function just as good in the atmosphere as it will in complete vacuum (not 100%true, but the idea behind it is ...)

On topic: this hyper sonic glider sounds to me like some sort of orbiting craft that will operate at the edge of space ... very much like satellites orbiting the earth, not very special, yet some of these babies will actually orbit earth at even higher speeds than this "glider", ok, they might be a bit higher up, but still not completely in outer space either ....

and if this glider is said to reach 13000mph anywhere near the surface of the earth,(lets say within 20miles of the surface) i'd like to see some accurate reports about it before i believe it ....
