_______

This is a new bill that was introduced on the floor of the US Senate entitled, “Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and Counterfeiting Act of 2017.”

It basically says everything is evil..

+Cash is Evil

+Bitcoin/Crypto is Evil

+Prepaid Phones are Evil

+Gift Cards/Vouchers/Coupons are Evil

_______

These people are certifiably insane. Among the bill’s sweeping provisions, the government aims to greatly extend its authority to seize your assets through “Civil Asset Forfeiture”.

Civil Asset Forfeiture rules allow the government to take whatever they want from you, without a trial or any due process.

This new bill adds a laundry list of offenses for which they can legally seize your assets… all of which pertain to money laundering and other financial crimes.

Here’s the thing, though: they’ve also vastly expanded on the definition of such ‘financial crimes’, including failure to fill out a form if you happen to be transporting more than $10,000 worth of ‘monetary instruments’.

Have too much cash? You’d better tell the government.

If not, they’re authorizing themselves in this bill to seize not just the money you didn’t report, but ALL of your assets and bank accounts.

They even go so far as to specifically name “safety deposit boxes” among the various assets that they can seize if you don’t fill out the form.

This is unbelievable on so many levels.

It’s crazy to begin with that these people are so consumed by the fact that someone has $10,000 in cash.

But it’s even crazier that they’re threatening to take EVERYTHING that you own merely for not filling out a piece of paper, without any due process whatsoever.

Oh, and on top of civil asset forfeiture penalties, there are also criminal penalties.

Right now according to current law they can imprison you for up to FIVE YEARS for not filling out the form. Five years.

But apparently that doesn’t go far enough so this bill aims to double the criminal penalty to TEN years in prison.

Further, their bill wants to pull any business which “issues” cryptocurrency under the anti-money laundering regulatory umbrella.

Here’s where these people demonstrate that they have no idea what they’re talking about.

No one “issues” Bitcoin. There’s no Bitcoin central bank. There’s no Chairman of Bitcoin who decides on a whim to increase the supply.

Bitcoin is created automatically amounts that are predetermined by its code. It’s software.

So the Senate is essentially trying to force the Bitcoin core software to comply with money laundering regulations.

The bill also attempts to drop a major bomb on Bitcoin by including it in the list of monetary instruments that must be reported when entering or leaving the US.

They don't need to find them if they are worthless. They aren't so stupid to think they would need to find them. They know they just need to de-value them.

It's sponsored by both parties, which is kind of dumb.

Its a pretty complicated bill, so everyone will be in favor of it.

I do see the merits in the bill. Bitcoin does promote tax evasion, anonymous extortion, illicit trafficking and regulatory bodies cannot oversee these transactions. Have you ever heard of crypto malware?

The bill completely misses the point because under a hidden service, these transactions cannot be traced. The hidden networks are global and making hidden services illegal is possible, but to track a user impossible. Bitcoin is an algorithmic concept that places value on supply and demand, determined by various servers around the globe. However, the system is not failproof; several hackers made millions on a single attack. Remember that most people in congress and senate are so old, they barely know how to turn on a computer. This bill should be reviewed by tech software experts before being allowed to move forward.

It may seem to you like a government conspiracy, but these services hinder statistician's job and economists will go crazy if everyone in the US switches to a hidden economy... just like if everyone switches to under the table payments.

Im not going into detail anymore than this, but there are 4 authors of the bill... not one "crazy bitch".Mr. Grassley (for himself, Mrs. Feinstein, Mr. Cornyn, and Mr. Whitehouse) are the authors.

And just because someone are anti-gun, doesnt add to your argument. I firmly stand with the evidence that gun crimes can reduce overall crime rate and weapon restrictions are the way to go.

I still know that encryption is essential to privacy, but you should be more concerned on how the GOP allows 3rd party advertisers to buy your data from ISP connection logs.

I agree, however, I do not believe they are conspiring, moreso it seems the bill is a power grab of some sort. And when you tie in anti-encryption you have to ask yourself what these people are trying to achieve. I understand tax evasion w/ crypto currency happens, not saying I do that, possibly I do but same could be said about beingn paid under the table. The dollar can be used for illicit activites and money laundering but in this case I agree that it is centralized and regulated unlike crypto currency which in many cases is decentralized. Still, the whole point of crypto was to create a decentalized albeit volitile platform where buyers and traders wouldn't have to worry about the banks up their ass. Though with the KYC policies, the banks and IRS seem to be watching closely.

The selling and compiling of info from ISP and selling to third parties has been happenig for a long time. It isn't just the GOP. I'd argue that what is even more important is data that is composed into unique demographs to identify you and your activites. Meaning, they built the demograph so to speak w/ your data, therefore being able to sell this to other parties. This is more vital to third parties than your specific data.
