Urban Rail Setup

I just got about 5 inches of fresh snow in my neighborhood and theres this rail that in the perfect place to ski right up the hill from my house. I dont have a snow shaping tool but i have a snow shovel, it is about 30 degrees and the snow is good for a jump. Does anyone have any advice on how to set up a little kicker or whatever you call them to get on to the rail about halfway down the stairs? I dont know how to set up a good jump. I read a thread on how to set up a jump in the backcountry a while ago and it said make big blocks of snow, stack them, and fill in the extra with other snow and pack it down then let the jump set, the snow needs to harden and pack together from my understanding. Does anyone have any tips or tutorial somewhere on how to set up the snow to get on the rail?

I can go take pictures if neccesary

Thanks

sounds like that's the best way to go. what else would you use to shape snow other than skis n a shovel?

just shovel a good sized pile of snow where ever you want the lip to be and pack it down. then you just shave off snow to make it the desired shape. you don't need to make blocks for urban unless your jump is going to be like 5 feet tall or something.

Oh thanks. Last night i made a pile of snow outside my house from all the snow in my driveway and jumped on it and packed it down but i came back 30 minutes and i jumped on it and it packed even more. Ill try more, and one problem i came across was when i pack it down it spreads out? Do i have to keep reshaping the jump every 10 attempts?

yeah shape a jump the way you would, (the way the comments above had said) and then pack it down enough that it doesnt make much of a print if you step on it with skis. then your going to salt it then wait until it refreeses then youre good to go!

I usually pile a lot of loose snow up into a way bigger jump then needed then i shape it/pack it into a solid jump you can easily stand on. make the lip pretty big and the takeoff relatively steep for a rail. remove exes snow and put it on the landing or whatever. but it also depends on how the snow is (powder, slush, etc.) good luck!!!

Thanks for all the help, theres not much snow left but now its super cold and expecting a foot in the next day!

i just make a big pile and keep packing it down every couple scoops of snow, and then drop some water on it and repeat
