Urban ons -- which side do you hit it from?

Been learning urban ons this year. My natural slide is left foot forward and I've been coming in from the left but falling off the right side of the rail.

I'm thinking if I come in from the right and am forced to pop and get my back tips over the rail it will more naturally allow me to plant more center and stay on the rail.

What about the rest of y'all? Do you come in from the side that your foot leads with or come in from opposite side of leading foot?

If you are slipping off the opposite side of the rail, lean back into the rail slightly harder. If by leaning into it in this way and coming at the rail from a slight angle, your momentum keeps you pinned to the rail.

This is the difference between a normal side hit and a lip on. The key to approaching from the left is to make sure you drop your front heel when you land. this will cause your skis to scissor which will have you grip the rail and stay on it. It becomes natural with practice. Doing a lip on requires scissoring as well, but instead you drop your front toes. They will come with practice.

If you're left foot forward, then you come in from the left side. If you're left foot forward and come from the right, it's lip on, and doesn't really make things easier. Just learn to scissor on your heel and you won't fall off the right side.

Make sure you commit and when you pop onto to the you land in a solid locked on stance. I find that if I dont commit and I land on the rail sloppy I slip off the other side. Just focus on getting a solid landing and good pop. Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. +k when I'm off mobile. Regarding scissoring, do you land on the rail with your heel back and nose up or do you land first "flat" and than adjust your skis to get the scissor going?

I've only got 7 days this year but all I think about is improving and making sure I do something just a little bit better my next time in the park.

You can do it either way really, I find it easier just to land in a scissor almost because then once you are ready it makes it easier to front swap or whatever as quick as possible

You kind of land with a mix of both. You will initially impact the rail but the sooner you slightly scissor, the sooner your momentum will stop moving you forward off the rail.

yeah you kind of need to raise your toes/tips so you hit the first edge of the rail (if it's a square shape rail, the left edge of the rail for you)

or if it's a round rail, you hit it lower, not on top of it.

I go on from the right side. First make sure you get the right angle when you jump on. If your leaning forward a little once you land you will for sure just keep going onto the other side. Id say get the right angle so you land centered. Then lean back a little, then dig the edge of your leading foot in this case the heel edge of your left foot. best of luck!
