Updates for the Geeks

So I guess my brain has been in turbo geek mode today... I went on a server security binge and fixed some stuff up. For the geeks in the crowd, here are some updates that happened today:

Installed Bastille Linux 1.3.0 (firewall to keep the annoying crackers out)

Installed PHPAccelerator (to make PHP scripts compile faster)

Upgraded PHP to 4.2.1 (I think that's the version.. too lazy to go check)

Dinked around with firewall settings to keep only core services that are needed open and learned how to do some funky IPChains scripting.. might implement some more of that tomorrow.

I'll get out of geek mode soon, don't worry.

Matt

HAHAHA! yea matt, we need the best firewall to keep those damn hackers of NS.com!thanks harvey

I like palm trees.

I like to ski, but I hate the freakin' cold. Us indian people weren't built for the cold. Why can't ski hills have palm trees?

nah harvey...like there's a command on the php command line that processes a php file to html so non frequently used files you can export as html and if you do it in crontab over a period of time it'll process the html file. i.e. less processor is used to send straight text constantly and process the file like once every half hour than it processing it millions of times over that same time interval...follow me?

Gotcha.. that's a good idea, but for the most accessed pages, they're too dynamic to be cached.. the only pages that would benifit from this are non-updated ones, which are the ones that hardly anyone looks at... do you think the amount of work required would be benificial enough?

Matt

well that would work for the online page, the forum selection page and the SSE high stats page.

Unless you're gonna eventually make a friends list for the online window. then it'd be useless... I think.

Nerd alert, whoah.

Lycoris, I was thinking of installing that onto my mega machine, however I am skeptical of it's dual processor and dual display support. Fellow nerds, should I be wary of Lycoris on this powerhouse?

uh yeah to some extent...like what they said the opening page, the sse, and the opening forum page if those are done like every 5 to 30 minutes...it might be worth it to some extent...but see you have the problem of checking session ids everytime someone loads a page and that's where the problem comes in. its probably not hounding the processor much at all so i really wouldn't worry about it...just something to keep you busy if you get bored.
