Unpopular opinion thread skier's edition

all other types of skiing are silly:

Racer dads don't ski anything other than groomers because they don't want to look bad

park skiers intentionally harm themselves

"freeriders" don't need 120mm skis and 150 flex boots when they can only manage a half day before heading home. It isn't "skied out", you just suck

backcountry-only skiers suck at skiing . Wiggle less and share that pow for everyone

uphill skiers are too cheap to buy lift tickets, but won't flinch at $1600 boots and $800 bindings

anything less than a blue run skier looks like they are going to war against the mountain, not having fun

backseat, out of control, skidder bros need to man-up and ski some black runs. get off the crowded runs!

in this case, marketing

I don't even care about the boots honestly it's the intuition liners Imo that are like 50+% of what makes them good. I have Roxa freebirds which are literally a 120 booter made from thicker plastic and the liner is what I love the most. The flex pattern and 3 piece shell isn't that revolutionary anymore. I do know though that alot of their boots are made from cheap plastic. Oh well kiddies love their colorful boots and I will admit they have some sweet looking boots. Plus the aggressive shape of the classic shell is appealing to alot of people I think. My friends dad still skis in old raiches he just got a new liner

The Bunch and New Wave isn't cool or stylish. Big mountain is much better.

I get so excited when ON3P posts a video of someone just fuckin charging instead of the usual Magnus swerve fuckery

Tell me about it. I'd much rather watch the Freeride World Tour than The Bunch smear and press just about everything on earth.

I'm sure this is going to get crapped on.

Real ski was kind of a let down this year. Before getting into this, I will say first, Antti and Casabon had amazing segments (amongst the best of all time). I really liked Hornbeck's, he really slayed, especially considering his broken ribs. Keegan's had bangers as well, some of the best shots period, but it would have really benefitted if he had the resources to film longer than two weeks.

I just felt the overall impression this year was less than the last year. I feel there will be heated debates Antti versus Phil, but in previous years, I feel there was a case to be made about almost all the segments. Like Ahmet's part didn't even medal and it was one of my personal favorite urban segments out there. (He grinding on an effing billboard)

This year, I understand that there were things out of the athletes control (Magnus/Hornbeck getting injured), but, I feel overall it lacked the polish from previous years. I remember in both past years, I would play all the segments at once in front of friends that didn't watch skiing and they were amazed front to cover. Like, this year, if LJ didn't want to go as hard as he did last year (which is more than understandable), they should have just gone with someone who was hungry to push it to their personal limit.

maybe the fact that LJ went so damn hard and didnt win changed the standard of what can win real ski. I think this happened with real ski for snowboarding too.

From his Olympic interviews Shaun White seems like a pretty decent guy. Also I thought I media were super douchy to bring up the settled sexual harassment case during his time to celebrate

my favorite thing is when there is a slvsh game between a prominent "new wave" skier and an otherwise run-in-the-mill skier. the "new wave" skier will do all these "wild" tricks that people seem to love so much and then the other skier will lace them first try.

I think Magnus' style is whack. He is a baller but he looks like a 16 year old aspergers kid who's parents dressed him to go skiing.

Snowboarding is fun as fuck

I grew up skiing (4yrs - 13yrs) then switched to snowboarding from (13-26) now back to skiing the last few years.. while snowboarding was fun I doubt I'll ever put snowboard boots on again.

Yeah, I feel. I’ve skied since I was two and started boarding this year, it’s hella fun but it’ll never be as good as skiing for sure

I am only amused by trains if every member of the train is throwing crazy shit. I remember seeing a lip on blind 2 train on insta and all the trend-kiddies were losing their minds over it. I literally could not have been any less indifferent about it

I always get nervous that someone is gonna fall and everyone else behind them will crash. Anyone have videos of this happening?

Right on for your formally airing your grievances, BUT...

-Tallest peak in Colorado is Mt Elbert @ 14,440ft. Sounds like all of your "Big Mountain" experience is in Frisco with front rangers who commute from Denver and wear saga bibs.

-freetouring = freeride touring =/= (all) ski touring. Skimo is a type of ski touring and I bet you wont find any of those weight weenies hucking their meat in the CB backcountry.

-Ian McIntosh is a dirty ginger and I can whole heartedly back you on your disapproval. (another) BUT the dude can shred a pair of sticks down a vertical face, and has probably sent more cliffs than either of us have ever walked up to and scoped.

While I'm posting here's my most unpopular skiing opinion;

"The best skiing in Colorado is in Summit and Grand counties" Anyone who has ever skied off of the I-70 corridor thinks its the epitome of skiing "out west". Little do they know down in the SW of the state, we have the snow, the terrain, and the local rippers to have those front range folks thinking their in Alaska.

Dude, everyone knows that CB, Teluride, Silverton, etc. has the best terrain in the state of Colorado, how is that an unpopular/controversial opinion?

The only thing slightly controversial is the claim about getting more snow. Loveland definitely gets more snow in an average year, the difference being that the terrain isn’t nearly as good.

Corn snow is a condition of snow that results from a nice freeze-thaw-repeat cycle, people love it cause it's soft and grippy and forgiving but not slushy or slow, it's kinda the Goldilocks zone of non-fresh snow

Style is a hundred times easier to have when you just swivel around and can't dub or even trip. imo there are only like 3 or 4 people who can huck a trip with style and that probably includes Henrik and maybe Kai Mahler with the carve trip 16 at x. Oh bUt hE sEnT A 1980 WItH nO sTeEzE I'd like to see you fucking try.
