Unpopular Opinion - Level 1

Anyone else feel really disappointed in the Level 1 movie this year? A couple good segments, a lot of shots we've already seen, no athlete interviews. I was really hoping for something more sentimental for their last film ever. Just a sub-par ski porn really.

Bro, it’s not their last film ever. It’s the last ANNUAL film, meaning it’s their last yearly film after doing one every year for 20 years. They will continue to make movies, just probably not every year, which in my opinion, is better. They’ll have more time to log more shots, better tricks, more time for creative editing, and possibly longer movies. Haven’t seen romance yet, but I’m very excited

I think Freedle and PWhite are making a movie this season, should be amazing.

And to OP: Over the past 5 - 7 ish years I would argue that the L1P movies have gotten pretty stale and formulaic. It's not that they're bad, it's just that they're the same good movie every year. It's like eating a perfectly cooked steak every night - yes, it's good, but it's predictable. Every year I say to myself "This is going to be the year, L1P is going to drop a Refresh/Shanghai Six/Eye Trip caliber movie" and it really hasn't happened. A big part of it is just the slow down in wow-factor skiing in movies. For the first ~12 years of L1P NBD spins and rail tricks were happening at every video shoot. When they dropped all of the footy (that nobody had seen any of cause no instagram or real ski) in one go it had a dramatic effect that can't be replicated today. Today's skiing is a lot more based on creativity (which I think is great) but it definitely doesn't have the same wow-factor that crazy big spins and rails have. A lot of the progression in creative skiing happens on social media or in small edits that aren't even posted on NS that get like 40 views on youtube.

Moving away from the annual film model is the best thing that level 1 could do at this point and I'm super stoked to see what they come out with in the coming years.

I would also like to add that Level 1 movies age very well. A bunch of their movies I wasn't crazy about at first and forgot about for a couple years still hold up crazy well 5 - 10 years down the road, which isn't something I can say about a lot of other ski movies.

Romance is not a retrospective or a documentary, if that is what you were expecting. Very much a movie for the present age, with a crew on a mission to go out with a bang. Sometimes it is impossible to match the hype perceived.

I think it’s also hard to fully gauge the emotional weight of the film in a crowded premiere setting. It’s a really beautiful movie and I am so grateful for Level 1 as a whole going out and working their ass off to provide us with something so special everytime.

A very good point

The podcasts alone have made me so happy. The tidbits ranging from the WME debacle to hearing about Pollard trying a double amongst Tanner, Henrik, and Phil have had me grinning these past few weeks. Ive got a ticket to the SLC premiere and cannot wait. I dont want to judge a movie by it's title, but I think Romance is the perfect title to end a 20 year run of annual films.

I'm curious what shots you already saw?? Besides stuff in the trailer which didn't give away much at all I don't know what you're referring to

I thought Romance had some very good and creative editing. The animated terrain made drunk me lose my shit

Popular opinion --> Where the shit is the media for not doing an actual review on this? The premiere or the actual movie? Usually, when a film (especially one as important as this) is premiered there's a least 1 adept writer from ___ media or at least a damn intern with an English degree is in the crowd to give a review and account of the event. Is NS just leaning on consumer-generated free content or what's going on here? Should this thought be moved to the "NS is dying" thread?

I've had no less than 15 forum posts be used on the Newschoolers facebook. Its fucked.

Yeah you're right, I was expecting something different. Feels like a big turn in ski culture, it was meaningful to have a place we could all meet up and celebrate the start of the season. I guess I'm sad to see it go, and I was hoping to see Level 1 reminisce a little more. Didn't mean to hate

For those who have seen it, can we have some more reviews/opinions on it? I won't be able to purchase it til it's on iTunes and I want to hear about it.

That being said, look at Stept and PoorBoyz. None of them have put out any kind of real ski movie in recent years, just Audi commercials and other 'Turnkey Media Projects". I dont blame them, its cool to be able to keep doing what you love and just mature into other more lucrative markets but I would not be surprised if Level 1 goes this same way.

UGC so hot right now.

It's like Newschoolers is a *gasp* community website and has been for 20 years. Sure, they should have a review or premiere thing out already from their staff but if someone wrote an article or thread on it and NS shared it, would that be "leaning on consumer-generated" content like they have since the dawn of NS? Maybe they should shut down the forums, video section, and news to go editorial like Freeskier or Forecast.

There is a difference between leaning on UGC and straight up copy and pasting posts from forums, which CERTAINLY is not what has happened since "the dawn of newschoolers"

Also - you've been a member since 2016 and yet only have 15 posts and are talking about the history of this site? If this isnt a red-name burner account I'll switch to snowboarding forever.

Does a bear shit in the woods?

Well sometimes a bear spends a whole year not shitting in the woods and then no one wants to do business with the constipated bear again.

After dark and sunny were the past 2 films i bought. Imo the best l1p films were 1 realtime/ 2 shanghai 6/ 3 high five/ 4 turbo/5 refresh

If you (or really anyone) is nervous about this all we can say is let our actions speak for us this season. Last year was a lot more brutal than most know but we have 19/20 inventory loading into our new warehouse in the next week with shipments to start this month.

Do you ship to France?

At the time of this message no(issue integrating Saga inventory systems with parent company systems). But we do ship internationally and will be by the end of November.

If the item you ordered is in stock and we have shipping available to your country you will receive it in the standard amount of time.

I don't know how quickly the whole process runs these days as I am no longer physically packing the orders, but I can tell you we are seeing order shipments placed and shipped out everyday since we launched our Winter 19/20 site.
