CU-Boulder has made it clear that it does not want the annual marijuana smoke out held on campus any longer, which has drawn nearly 10,000 people to Norlin Quad to light up on 4/20 in recent years.Denver attorney Rob Corry, no stranger to marijuana-related lawsuits, is representing the activists and is seeking a hearing this afternoon. Corry recently participated inThe Huffington Post's Great Marijuana Debate and has defended more medical marijuana criminal cases than any other attorney in Colorado and is the only attorney to win multiple acquittals for defendants facing medical marijuana charges."To my knowledge, there has never been a case where a public university has blockaded and shut down its entire campus to squelch free speech activity there," Corry told The Huffington Post regarding the campus shut down. "This is a radical overreaching on CU's part. When did marijuana become so offensive at CU-Boulder of all places?"CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano made this statement about the reasons for employing such extreme measures to end the gathering via the school's website:The gathering disrupts teaching and research right in the heart of the campus. The size of the crowd has become unmanageable, and limits our faculty, staff and students from getting to class, entering buildings and doing their basic work. It needs to end. Then later, in a letter written to The Denver Post, DiStefano goes further stating that the marijuana celebration is far from a protest or demonstration and should not be treated as such. "If it is a protest, then every party on every college campus in America is a protest," DiStefano writes.CU spokesman Bronson Hillard explained the chancellor's invoking of a long-standing CU-Boulder policy to shut down the campus to The Daily Camera. Hillard says that a Boulder campus policy titled "Campus Use of University Facilities" allows the chancellor to restrict access because of weather, safety concerns or "disruption," which DiStefano says the 4/20 event is in his statement.Corry emphatically disagrees with DiStefano and Hillard, saying to The Huffington Post:There is no evidence that this is a "disruption" to CU's mission. In fact, this peaceful protest is entirely consistent with CU's mission of education and empowering students and citizens to engage in open discussion and exchange of ideas regarding relevant issues of the day. A police crackdown against ideas will harm CU's reputation far more than any peaceful protest will.Corry was also critical of DiStefano's dismissive statements that the 420 event is simply a "party." "There is no evidence to support the view that this is a "party," Corry said. "This event involves expressive conduct and free speech and association, which if not safe on a public college campus, is not safe anywhere."Classes will continue as scheduled on April 20 and the campus will remain open to all CU-Boulder students, faculty and staff, but they will need their BuffOne ID cards to get on, and around, the campus, a press release from CU-Boulder states.Police will be dispersed around campus and will have checkpoints set up at all major campus entry points. Anyone who is not a student, staff or faculty member will not be permitted on campus and individuals found on campus without a BuffOne ID will be subject to a ticket for trespassing.Norlin Quad, where the 4/20 smoke out is usually held, will be closed to all people--not just visitors--on April 20, and in order to make it clear that no one is welcome on the Norlin lawn, a fish-based fertilizer will be dispersed over the quad that day, The Denver Post reports.Chancellor DiStefano has the support of the CU-Boulder student government who is endorsing this move to crackdown on the 4/20 festivities. Student leaders have organized a free April 20 concert on campus by hip hop artist Wyclef Jean at the Coors Event Center as an alternative to the campus smoke out. For more information on the free concert, visit the Program Council's website.According to KDVR, CU has said that the 4/20 event costs the university more than $50,000 in cleanup and safety. However, the entire Wyclef Jean concert will cost CU approximately $150,000, according to The Daily Camera.

hhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhu 4/20 huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhu like, the establishment won't know why we picked that date cuz our secret club is totes secret pffchcfhfchfchfcfhcfhchffhcfh I'M SO HIGH!!!

Some people take 4/20 way to seriously. Who needs a day to smoke weed? You can smoke a oz of weed in a day with your homies no matter what day it is, 4/20 is played.

10000 peacefully smoking marijuana peacefully denounces the integrity of American drug laws

I'm sad I won't be attending this year, it was truly an incredible experience

This is humorously stupid. Last time I checked, smoking pot in the middle of a university quad is illegal. It was just tolerated in the past.

One love! Now I can't chill with my bros, toss the hackey sack around and listen to bob marley. Thats totally not gear shaft.

I would say that the university's approach to handling the situation is a little more extreme than the lawsuit, which does have legal ground. Is it an infringement on first amendment rights to purposely close off an area that a group was going to use for a peaceful demonstration, with the intent to disrupt that peaceful demonstration?

it is not a violation of first amendment rights. gathering on the university will do nothing to change the laws. if they were truly protesting, they would hold their "protest" at the state capital where the laws are made. 420 at CU has been nothing more than an excuse to smoke weed in public. it has given the school an undesirable reputation and takes away from the value of a degree from CU. the crack down is long overdue and the university is in no way infringing on anybody's rights.

Seriously, been there done that. This whole thing is kind of rediculous though. The chancellor isnpushing his own agenda. He doesn't like weed whatever but if the student body wishes to protest that law who is he to stop it. He is there as a facilitator to the students not a king to tell them how to live their lives.

The judge already ruled in favor of CU. Not entirely surprising given that the modern justice system has complete disdain for the Constitution.

there is a 420 rally at denvers capital building as well, just not as many hot CU sluts

my mommy told me to make lemonade when served lemons in life,

if they sprayed the field with fish fertilizer, i say plant your weed plants there!

Completely wrong. If the chancellor had it out for everyone that smokes weed do your think they would spend 150,000 on a concert.... Basically the reason they are shutting it down is to get rid of all the people who come from out of town. 4/20 on norlin brings in a lot of weird less than reputable people. CU is trying to prevent this, they are just trying to limit it to students this year, hence the concert. I have many friends on student government, and it was a pretty general consensus that it has gotten out of hand.

i like this post. i agree. i smoke weed everyday. but i got school and work today like normal people and gotta get my shit done. and if i didnt have shit to i would go skiing

THE COPS CANT TAKE OUR FREEDOM MAAAN

boo fucking hoo. all it does is make you vape in your dorm room 365 days a year instead of 364

honestly the last few years its been populated by mad juggalos and random ass people.. I don't mind them trying to get rid of it

As a CU student, I for one am stoked that they are cracking down. It bums me out that our campus looks like a police state today, but if it means keeping all the weirdos and people who came to colorado for the sole purpose of blazing off campus, I'm all for it. I like to puff from time to time, but when it comes to the reputation of my degree I don't want it to be diminished by people who aren't even affiliated with the school. Its not like boulder has some shortage of open spaces to gather besides on campus.

lawsuit is going to fail so bad. it's private property, they can close it whenever they damn well want. stupid stoners.

420 is played. I bet all the freshman are pissing there pants over this also. honestly, it was nothing more than a festival, but only 30 minutes long. CU is just packing everyone into Coors event center and putting fertilizer on Norlin to get the scene out of the publics eye. Let the activists file suit, it will probably get thrown out anyways because smoking weed is illegal. Pretty much the Denver scum ruined this event. The business school had to turn away guest speakers today because all of the hotels in Boulder were at capacity. Watch the line at Cheba Hut extend 3 blocks long today, just because its Cheba Hut.

I wouldn't want the influx of freaks, addicts, homeless people and criminals that all show up to big public pot smoking events. On my campus either. This lawsuit will fail because the school is actively trying to protect their student bodies, reputation and safety. The fish based fertilizer is beyond tactical hahah big props to who ever subtly added that variable.

Exactly, they're just pissed cause somebody is trying to say they can't gather in a public place and do an illegal activity. The free speech thing is just a lame excuse for them to attract attention.

i go to cu and have to say the shut down of campus slowed things down much more than the usual 420 distractions, which only occurred between 2 and 5 basically. the school also put a shitty smelling fish fertilizer on the lawn to keep people off....wtf. i don't care that much about 420 being shut down, but if the school really wanted to protect their image they would have done this years ago before 420 became nationally recognized. the argument about protecting the value of ur degree is bullshit- that starts with more students at CU taking college seriously, not shutting down one day where kids smoke weed in public.

yep this is what i've heard, so glad i didn't venture to boulder this year!!! Much rather be getting high as fuck in the peaceful mountain not worried about a single fuck given...

wow i was planning on applying there until now because of this. hahahhahahahhahaha jk jk i still wanna go there really badly (and not cuz of this or weed) but i was bummed to see this. i wanted to take part in this lol but first i gotta get in. hopefully my parents dont find out about this until after i apply there hahhahahhahah

I cannot stand hard core stoners, they have got to be the most abnoxious people on the face of the earth. We get it, you smoke weed, you don't have to try and promote your bad habit to everyone else 24/7.

Wow, an academic establishment does not approve of illegal activities on school grounds, shocker! You should all write essays about weed legalization.
