UBC Rail Jam Suggestion Thread

So we're starting to plan this years rail jam, and we'd like to make it much more legit and fun than last years. If anybody was here for both, last years was a huge improvement from 3 years ago's.

The Knoll got destroyed over the summer to build a new Student Union Building, so we're trying to get clearance to hold it between two of the libraries (IKB and Koerners). It should have a similar slope.

So far we're planning on having the same down skinny box that we had last year, plus at least one more feature. I'm rallying for a kink, or a down-flat, but the kink will need some digging (probably not going to happen).

What are your guys' thoughts? What would you like to see, both in features and event format?

that will be quite a bit more effort to get the snow there :( Would almost be easier to make a scafold drop ramp thing in front of the sub on the field, but that would slow the flow of the jam by quite a bit.

Yeah if we could somehow get a lift tower pipe, that would be sick. Otherwise, I like the idea of just the down flat box too. But like buddy above said, it's going to be tough to get that much snow in there. Honestly, even if there was just the down skinny box, I'd be pumped. The rail jam is such a sweet event.

Update:

We've got clearance for the above mentioned area. We realize it will be a lot of snow, and we're planning on building a mini-scaffold as a drop in so we need a bit less snow.

We'll hopefully have the same opportunity to choose rails as last year (ie show up at Momentum's storage yard and pick and choose).

Update:

We've confirmed the down skinny box (from last year), and are looking for a second rail.

We've also been given clearance to use the above mentioned space between the libraries.

Hyyyype shit is getting going!

Threads, it's so cool that you do this! Can't wait to see it

Would a keg/barrel work in front of one of the rails with the amount of snow you get? I'm just suggesting. Kinda like this:

the barrel is fun, its nice to have one cause it can be used on multiple features and in different ways. I went to a rail jam once that had one just as a side hit, which was fun, you could send quick backies over it and the people watching it really enjoyed it more than the rails.

it sounds like the rails will be on a flatter level of ground this year which will be dope, more time to get techy. should definitely try and get a big bag of salt, so the lips will hold their shape when people spin on. when people were trying 2s on last year, it was like 2 kids could try then the lip would be diminished and there was no chance of spinning onto that puppy

I hit a summer urban with a bungee on 2 occasions, 2 weeks apart. the first time we had no salt, the second time we did, and it made suuuuch a huge difference.

Pretty sure salt would be a bad idea as it would lower the freezing point of the snow, and melt it quicker.

We're already going to be strapped for snow so we're probably not going to salt. I'll chat with the crew about this idea but I think they'll agree.

When I used to work for park crew we always used salt in the spring and it kept the snow in good shape (and that was in PA spring conditions, where it never gets close to freezing and we dont have much snow). I guess salt melts a thin top layer of the snow but the cold snow below it refreezes it so it becomes hard. The only problem with this is you have to give it a few minutes to settle, but then you will have to rake it a whole lot less.

You guys could test it out on the snow from the UBC ice rink and see what you think. It could definitely be worth it.

Real good insight, thanks dude.

Things are getting rolling now, but I think in the location we're using we'll have a speed issue.

A crew of us are going to build a drop in (very large to support at least 2 riders at once) to gain speed.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be appreciated. Otherwise we're gonna get some timber and build'r.

From my experience, salt is a must have for when it's above zero. It melts the snow on top and then the snow beneath freezes it and it makes a nice hard lip, in-run, etc...

As for the drop in. look into renting some scaffolding. It's super strong and easy to put together.

October 19th!

I'll be posting some more info in the next week or so when we get everything dialed.

But NO, you do not have to be a UBC student.

tiiiiight! keep us posted... sfu ski needs to step their shit up, ive attended more ubc ski parties than my own snow club's haha

Its gonna be the same format as last year, if you were there.

Jam style with everyone sessioning at the same time, and we'll keep our eyes open for impressive stuff. Top riders will move on to the finals where it'll be jam style again, but with fewer people sessioning at once.

Some preseason hype!

first place skier: Surface Skis!

not sure which model yet. possibly the Blanks! not yet released!

Yes, there'll be prizes for both skiers and snowboarders.

"Prizes will be awarded for all sorts of shennanigans, provided by our sponsors: Whistler, Showcase, Cariboo, Quicksilver, Recon Instruments, Rockstar, Surface, and many more.

There's been talk of Surface unveiling their brand new ski, the Blank, as a top ski prize."

but really, just the skiing should be a prize enough!

Kool that you linked these photos, they are from a contest I enterd last year in Hemsedal. The guy on skiis is also a buddy of mine hehe

Would be nice with some Pvc pipes for a shoot out, Or a mini quarter/ spine in the bottom, or 2 pvc pipes next to eachother with a gap inbetween would be fun! Than i guess the riders will be able to get really creative!
