UBC Class of 2015?

hell yeah, i remember me at this time of the year last year!

im going back into second year, taking a lot of film studies and visual arts. hit me up if you need some supplies you wont be able to get right when you head into residence.... if ya know what im sayin!

got a house on granville street to so ill holler when were having keggers at the beginning of the year! my friends and I can show you all the cool spots on campus to chill at, too.

but yeah UBC is a great school, just hit the books heavy and party hard right when you start, dont fall behind with your work and dont get caught up in the silliness and youll have a great year!

haha word man, thats quite the hookup.

and for anyone who might care to know, im thinking im gonna pass up at whis and seymour. i worked my schedule out pretty well so i should be able to make it to the north shore at least once a week mid-week.

Sounds sick! Can't wait to be there. Stoked on the hook up, thanks a ton.

I'll be at Gala to but I'm think I'm gonna be in a hotel cuz my early arrival didn't end up working out.

hell yea, just saw this thread, i'll be starting my first year up there in the arts too. I'm going the poly sci/econ route, pretty stoked. Also just got my housing today, it's totem park at the new building with some funky spelling. I'm coming from the states and don't know a single person but my 19th birthday is sept. 16th so if any of you are down to celebrate with me, hit me up! And thanks vt_scratch, i may have to take you up on that kind offer of yours.

Sounds like a lot of skiers are coming to ubc this year! Im pumped for this winter. Im going to try and hit up whistler every weekend, and there is a good chance Ill get a seymour pass for after classes in the week. Let me know if you want a ride up to the mountain.

If anyone is in gage especially new from the states and needs some help getting settled, ski pass, phone, banking, food shopping, wayfinding around campus, ect. give me a shout and I will help ya out, I should there for early arrival too(sept 1st)

Im a fourth year KIN major from 'Merica finishing up first term living in east tower, broke my leg biking this summer and got on campus disabled housing

I'm in Totem, Dene House room 123. Basically same story, coming from the states and don't know anyone. Definitely down to celebrate your 19th haha.

We'll definitely have to get some car pools to the mountain going this winter, Who else is bringing a car?

yeah man.

how many of you are like me and get canadian tuition cuz you grew up in canada? or did you just love ubc that much and were down to pay the 20grand or whatever it is for international students (still not that bad compared to lots of american schools).

yeah i think im gettin a whis pass and one to a local mountain, i havent skid any of the locals yet though. you guys like seymours park best? a couple of my friends will have cars, a bunch of us should line up our schedules and find some good times to carpool midweek afternoon and nights. im trying to get a lot more skiing in this season than I did the last!

Prepare to party hahaha, Dene 5th was well known last year.

.

Keep in mind that the awesome Upass can get you to any local mountain... There are also buses that go from Lonsdale Quay (seabus terminal) to every local mountain, and cypress has a few better bus options for UBC students (you have to pay for those though). From what I've heard though Seymour is the best, and if its as good as I've heard (greatest hits park, 6 jump line at closing) then it will be well worth the bus ride. I'm thinking I'm going to go with the seymour pass, because everyone seems stoked on that place.

I would go with seymour. The buses don't bring you to the top so you either have to take seymours bus which costs $12 round trip, or hitchhike up. However, I feel that more ubcers get passes to seymour, and hopefully I will too (dont know if I have the $ yet, but if I do buy one I will be driving up there as much as I can). Furthermore, the pass to seymour if you buy earlybird is only around 200 dollars, whereas the passes to grouse and cypress are much more expensive. Seymour's park is nothing great in my opinion, but it is definitely a fun place to go to get away from the stress of school.

Local mountains really aren't as easy to get to ass people make it out to be from UBC. Unless you have a car or a friend with one its really hard to ski after class and make it worth your while, a UPass is great, but Grouse is the only mountain you can get to directly from public transit.

Personally I liked Seymours park best last year (mind you I only skied grouse once whistler and seymour closed). Very 'street' style, which is a nice change from Whistlers park. The thing is Grouses' lifts are WAY faster than seymours and you will get much more mileage there and driving up the mountain to seymour drains the tank. Cypress' park sucks and is easily the hardest to get to from UBC.Since the Y2play passes are gone now, seymours is really the most affordable, but just know that its like a 45min trip when its all said and done getting there by car and like 90mins by public transit/ hitch hiking (might as well have found a lift to whistler).

The past years I've done a few volunteer teaching days at Seymour for a pass and forked up for the Whis pass. I'm only at UBC for one more semester so I won't bother getting a seymour pass just whissslar this year.

very worthwhile info, thanks man. if its really that time consuming getting there maybe ill just stick with trying to get to whis. ive got no classes on thursdays during second term, so im hoping to do some midweek skiing somewhere on a pretty regular basis.

and as for the tuition question above. unfortunately, i am paying international rates. that said, its still withing a few grand of what i would've paid to go one of the UCs in california. considering that ubc is at an infinitely nicer location than most (if not all) of the UCs and has comparable (if not better) academics, so it was an easy decision to make.

ya totally depends, myself I skied Seymour one evening a week (i had that day off too) just so I would get 5 hours of studying in, because if you do the whistler thing honestly don't bank on getting much done cause chances are you'll be too tired to study after (atleast I was). If you have days where you end at noon or like 3 pm Seymour is perfect. But like 7pm type things it won't be worth it.

Its kinda hard to find time to ski when chances are you're not the best at time management in your first years (atleast I wasn't) and you have less flexibility in your schedule. But for me in the winter time I just tell myself everytime I can study during the week means I can ski more on my days off

For me 1st year I got 17 days of skiing (mind you I was on the varsity track team), 2nd year 40 days, 3rd year 60 days (finally quit track) and 4th year 85 days. Every year other than my first year I was able to schedule having all my classes in 3 days of the week (12 credits), I'd recommend doing that, but set atleast one or two of your 4 days off for doing homework (maybe ride local in the evening) so you don't fall behind. Its easy to forget you have shit to do when skiing all the time, don't get greedy, but if you manage your time right you can easily ski 50 plus days and have decent grades.

And I also agree with the tuition, for Americans. Academically UBC is ranked about the same as Berkeley, and from what I understand you'd be paying a similar amount even at domestic tuition. So bang for your buck UBC is a good option.

"For me 1st year I got 17 days of skiing (mind you I was on the varsity track team), 2nd year 40 days, 3rd year 60 days (finally quit track) and 4th year 85 days."
this
I got maybe 15-20days first year, 40ish 2nd, 65 3rd, and well lost track 4th
First year classes are the hardest imo, in canada where everyone and their mother can go to school for cheap I feel like they need to weed kids out. I didnt really get in the skiing I thought i would until second year. Remember UBC is a hard school and first year is full of parties and whatnot so you might not find the time. (save up your pennies for booze too, its mad pricy in canada as well)
Also remember its canada and gas is $$$$$$$$, so make sure you pack those carpools or else you will be shelling out quite a bit of money each trip. Lots of people get 2 passes but honestly if you are living on campus its a trek and a half to the locals unless you have a car.
but all you new people, get ready to have a good time

^Nailed it on the head with the hammer, ^ totally found first year courses the hardest even when I did a few in my third year. The way they are set up are much more difficult not to mention that classes averages are always lower.

Like you said, Canada has the highest post-secondary education rate in the world not to mention UBC has LOTS of international students.

Coming from a second year former science student... You can do it man, you just have to commit to school and skiing 100%. The program is tough and you will need to study a lot but if you keep it together, make it to all your classes, and don't party too much it's completely possible.

Like I said man, if you prioritize you can easily ski 50 plus days. I had practice on campus most saturdays and sundays so you could ski much more than me. Pencil down all your assignments and midterms at the start of the semester and set aside days to ski no matter what, you can only study so much. The main thing that will stop you from skiing and studying is partying. Party September/ October get it out of your system, then buckle down for winter.

Know that during midterms and finals you will not ski, but there is many times during the year when you can ski lots, like 4 days a week. And then reading break= 7 days, christmas you can ski 10 easy. So you will be able to ski much more than I did, don't worry.

skiing a good amount in university is feasible, especially if you're not working you'll have weekends free. just prioritize your school work, keep up to date with assignments and readings. you can also read on the way to whistler, that's a good 4 hours of reading both ways on the weekends. reading week is prime skiing time, there's also stat holidays and ski club trips. definitely get in the ski club

you have nothing to lose by joining it (well 20 bones). But the premieres/ parties are fun, some good deals on gear and trips (never done them myself since I have whis pass) But its more of a party club. But no shame with that.

currently chilling in my room in cariboo, filling out some paperwork so im eligible for healthcare when my temporary card runs out. if anyones trying to kick it now or later today pm me so i can hit you back with my number.

also my roommate was saying something about a sigma chi party tonight, anyone thinking of going? i most likely will unless something else comes up, but im not sure how great it will be haha.

nothing at the moment, last night i just wandered around campus and kicked it with a few random groups i ran across. ill most likely do the same tonight unless something more official comes up haha.

Is it worth it to get up early for imagine day? I'm living out in Burnaby so it's quite the commute to campus, especially for something that starts at eight in the morning. Also, I'm a transfer student from UBCO. I'm just trying to figure out if I should set my alarm for 530 or just sleep and have friends show me around.

Too late now but id say it was a pretty big waste of time. Anyone headed to the frat party tonight ??

being underage myself, there doesnt seem to be a whole lot going down other that a few frat parties :/.

that said last night was utter insanity on campus.

Dang, I'm tempted to go down to campus( I live in Burnaby) just to see what's going on, and out of sheer boredom. But if there isn't anything really happening I can see that being an incredible waste of time.

Jeez, I'm always doing other things when fun stuff goes down. I had an incredibly awkward night last night, I thought my friend, his girlfriend, and a few other people were going to go out to a pub. Turns out it was me and two couples and we just sat at his place and drank.

So who is getting a seymour pass? the 200ish dollar deal only lasts for a few more days. Im pretty sure I will, I just havent bought it yet.

Fuuuuck gotta get on that....

Anyone going tramping tonight?

If you guys didn't already know, UBC has a tramp place on thunderbird blvd, $10 for 2 hours of drop in, monday/wednesday night 8-10 pm. They have a floor, mini tramps, an olympic tramp, tons of mats and stuff... Pretty legit.
