DISCLAIMER: I typed this out after a party last night, I can't guarantee how sane it sounds

Football is a big deal in 'Murica. The training is extensive and seemingly neverending. Practice and games seem to take up the whole week, leaving no time to do school work. Grades drop and all of a sudden the seniors are hoping to get into university with the only thing they have left- football. Trying to get on the school team in university is tough though, and staying on it is too. Where do the rejects and dropouts go? They join the army.

They've already been through intense physical training over the last few years, and they're used to being bossed around by a superior.

That's about as sane as water polo players secretly being prepped as Space Marines since they spend most of their time in a physical, competitive and weightless environment.

well then it would be the army sponsoring and promoting football (making it popular) with OPs being the only intent?

The army itself doesn't promote it and make it popular though, that's up to America in general (fans). What I got out of the OP was the army is a last resort for football players who aren't good enough for college level and don't have the grades for college. The army doesn't cause bad grades and insufficient skills.
 
I played 3 varsity sports in high school (including football), and still graduated with high honors and top 10% of my class.

The real conspiracy is what they are doing at DIA. =huge underground orgy caves where Government working stiffs go to snort coke of some std infected stripper's ass.
