ive been having trouble with step up rail, and any rails where i need to hop up on from the side. i kinda just cant lock on and jump over the rail. i also slip out of them alot especially the down rails.

any tips help thanks

If you're hopping over the rail that means you're carving into it too much. Also you're slipping out because you're too far on your back edge. Try to keep your weight 50-50. Or try to think of it more of 60-40 so you aren't slipping out.

Also if you get completely 90 and look at the end of the rail and try not to lean too far on your toes you should be able to lock on pretty well.

think of jumping on to the side of the rail with your tips pointed up a bit rather than just jumping flat on top of it

Well what helped me Hope up from the side is just remembering the basics. come up at a slight angle, pop onto the rail square you shoulders up to the rail and keep your eyes at the end of the feature. And just make sure you lean forward on down rails just a little bit and you will almost feel that you are locked in atleast that's how it was for me. Another thing is that you need to come in with speed! If you come on the rail quicker not only with you slide it smooth and faster but you'll have less of a chace of slipping out or over the other side. Just keep trying them and hopefully you'll get them. And one more thing you can do is watch a video of someone doing an urban rail then try to copy what they do.

above posts are all pretty bang on. Every rail is different too so don't get discouraged if ever you have to hit em a few times to get the speed and your lock dialed.

I'm having the exact same problem, so its not just you. All of these tips seem lie what I need to do to get it.

To add to this. More speed actually helps a lot with staying on. It's like riding a bike. The faster you go the easier it is to keep your balance. A wider stance also makes a big difference.
