tree wells

Just wanted to make everyone aware of tree wells. Yesterday a snowboarder died in Whislter after falling into a tree well. Make sure you ski with someone, and keep an eye out for each other. Falling into a tree well is like having a sand dune collapse onto you...you are trapped (especially with a board), and eventually soffocated. Pass the word on.

oh yeah...also another boarder died the same way down in Washington State a couple days ago....so I guess it happens a lot (especially as spring nears).

oh shit, that sucks. did you know the guy? a friend of mine died like that last season. if somebody dies skiing thats the worst way to go.

Steamboat what!?! CO represent!

the branches of the tree catch the snow falling aroun the tree creating an area a couple of feet around the tree where there is no snow, and it goes down the depth of the snow. If you fall in headfirst you can be stuck upside down in a 8+ foot hole that is pretty tight fitting.

when i was a little kid i used to play up in the trees w/ my friends without skis on when our parents would send us up on the bus. We would make forts around tree wells and stuff. that's different though, one time we had to pull my friend kenny out by his poles. Afterwards we would sit abov the cat track and roll big snowballs down onto people. those were the days

Earlier this season at alpental when i was skiing with jeff and his peeps from vancouver i fell in a creek well or whatever, where its to warm for the snow to fill in.. and i went to fast around a turn in the loewer bc (where its all bushy and treeyey(?)) Anyway took me like 20 min to get out and i was very lucky that the snow i landed on didnt collapse into the creek or river, cus it would have been another 5 ft deeper.. Yah just be careful, cus alot of shit happens when you least expect it.
