Travis Rice makes skiing look foolish

I guess technically this is old news but FUCK, i just watched Absinthe Films' "Pop" for about the 1000th time, and Travis Rice pretty much singlehandedly makes our sport look dumb. If you haven't seen the movie, check it out: he does all the stuff skiers have been talking about doing for the last 5 years... backside 180's in the middle of GNAR lines into sw. cork 5's off really tall cliffs and windlips and stuff, crazy butters, manuals and tricks off double stage cliffs etc! Not to mention the double rodeo over Pyramid. Not to mention being the first snowboarder to ever hit Chad's and then proceeding to make children cry as he killed the gap harder than any skier EVER (sw cork 7's, big cork 5's and rodeos etc.) like seriously, until tanner sw 9'd chad's i thought there was no hope for skiing. Maybe there is, but until we catch up, Travis Rice is making us all look silly.

WUT? Rice does kill it, but what he does is not better then what Seth, CR, and Pep are doing. And tanners/jon's footie of Chads is way more gnar then Rice's.

Not to mention the size of his Big Mountain Lines, smaller than those of Seth or Hugo.

Much like skiin ghas a huge advantage in the pipe, snowboarding has in switch Pow Landings. Snowboards are more center mounted, and respond similarily in both directions, with similar body positions. Skis are not center mounted. when you land switch, your stance is different, you weight is naturally over the back of the skis and you have to really lean into it to keep the tails out of the snow.

We can boost bigger, snowboarders can land easier, its just life, but at the same time, having watched some of this years trailers, backcountry switch is coming...

Not to mention the anonymous guy who 180 in, cab540 out of AirJordan in Whistler in 2004....

 
you are hugly mistaken my friend. i havent seen seth cr tanner hugo do a 180 off a natural wind blown spine down a 42 degree pitch to a cab 180 off another natural spine nor has anyone even attempted double corks other than wilson himself off perfectly made and shaped park jumps especially off chads gap which is a whooping buuck 20 nor has a skiier redickulously over shot chads gap to the base of the landing pad. Travis Rice is a golden god and if we can take skiing as far as Rice and others have taken snowboarding I will be so stoked and so for that MOVEMENT.

Travis Rice IS SOOOOO mcuh better than any skier right now.

His lines might not be as crazy as Seth's oR Hugo, but they are DAMN close, and he straight up KILLS any kind of jump more than any skier. So if you took Tanner Hall and melded him with Seth Morrison from Ski Movie 3, and then put in a little bit of Charles Gagnier, you might begin to have an idea of how good he is.

For those of you who say he isnt as good, you just don't know what you're talking about.

 
Take Tanners park tricks and put them on seth's lines and you get rice, he is the sickest thing on snow. Dude double corks over chad's?

basically, you put together the sickest segments together from all aspects of skiing... and you get travis rice. dude kills park, dude kills pow, dude kills bc and booters, doin stuff both ways... alllll of it. thats what travis rice us... our greatest person in each aspect put into one...

as you say, his lines may not be crazy big like hugo or seth, but.. nonetheless, theyre damn close. and hes doin way nuttier stuff on em, too.

Exactly like Erik said. Do a 180 on a board and you can still turn your head and be looking the way your traveling. Do a 180 on skis and you have to look behind you to look the way your going. I know its a horrible comparison, but skiing and boarind are totally different

i like skiing as much as the next guy and i definitely like it more than snowboarding. my point was just that in the midst of all this talk of progression and such, travis rice is busy kicking our collective asses.

I didn't realize sucking snowboardings dick still made you look like you were that much of a hardcore skier. Three or four years ago maybe, but then again, I'm not very progressive.

dude they are both snow sports, and have the same tricks, and the same jumps, snowboarders are easier to spin on, but then again who cares how fast you can spin on the ground because after your hittin a 100 feet that doesn't matter. Its all floated and calculated and takes the same balls.

come off it. the comparisons have always been made. snowboarding's influence on skiing style, development of tricks, and big mountain progression have always been valid comparisons and people have always made these comparisons. to see a snowboarder combine all these aspects so well invites a comparison with skiing (esp. cuz travis is DOING all the things skiers have said they've been WANTING to do the last four years). to ditch all these comparisons once a snowboarder starts getting really gnar is a copout.

I meant that the comparison is equally stupid... why bother. Does being able to say "YAY, we're beating snowboarding!" Make you happier to be a skier? Does it make you enjoy the sport more? Personally it doesn't even make sense to me at all. Why should any one sport be beating another? Hell, if we're so closely connected, why not just merge us into "snowsports"... then no one has to beat anybody and we can all go on our merry way having fun in the fluffy white stuff.

I love Pop, but making ski and snowboard movies into a sport war is making yourself look like a jackass.

i know what you meant, that's why i quoted your post. i'm not any happier when skiing is "beating" snowboarding or vice versa. however, considering the way each sport influences the other, i think it's a good idea to check up on snowboarding because healthy comparisons can help spur the progression of skiing. no one is being a jackass, so don't try and take the high road. i just care about our sport.

Im impressed at how many people still think that travis rice did the double cork over chads. It was over pyramid kiddies. And backside 180s in backcountry lines are a far cry from a 180 in a line on skis. Given, travis is one of the best things on snow right now (well, on big backcountry hits anyway, his park hits and rails are far from the best in the industry) but dont undermine skiing so badly, skiing is still ahead of snowboarding in the backcountry be it hits or lines, and snowboarding obviously still slaughters skiing on rails.

ya i agree. skiing and snowboarding are simply two totally different sports.. i mean there was this road gap comp once, and on the warm ups i tried a buddies board and i swear i did a rodeo, and it was easier than a 5 i tell ya, u can kick in with the front leg and spin however you wont, there's no comparison between a snowboarder cork and a skier cork. travis rice is amazing, but skiing's still skiing. he deserves all due respect but you shouldnt take it he's kicking our asses here,really

Unfortunately, some of the 'steeze patrol' quickly condemned the maneuver, claiming lack of style. Well, it was the first time he ever tried the trick and he probably would have gone and done it again if he hadn't broken both skis when he landed, and he left blackcomb the following morning.... but that's a separate issue. If all the style sluts had given him some love instead of knocking it, he'd probably be your man right now. Fact is, the people who talked shit did so because they felt threatened by someone else's enormous potential, just like they talk shit on the wilsonflip presently. Just wait till double corks with style are the norm, and it won't be long now.

Travis Rice is fuckin' sick. But until the double cork, he was on par with Candide's historic Chad's debut years ago! I bet Wilson double corks that gap this season. Travis Rice doesn't make skiing look stupid, but he has taken a small step ahead for now.... competition forces progression.

Thanks to him, the bar has been raised for our top pros to see and respond to as they see fit.
