Travelling with skis

How does everyone bring their skis on planes? The charge for oversized bags is rediculous. Do you ship them? Just suck up the $150+ charge for the large bag?
Curious as to what everyone does
 
pack all your shit in your ski bag, and take 1 backpack for other stuff. Most airlines have an free sport equipment consideration for luggage. So if you got 1 bag, they will allow up to 15 or 20kgs without charge. I've done it to New Zealand and Japan.
 
Some airlines alllow ski bags. When I went out west for spring break, I flew Southwest I think, and they allowed a ski bag, boot bag, and a normal bag for each person.

So it depends on the airline I guess
